Michelin - Pilot Supersport v Pilot Sport 4

It's getting to that time when I'll need to replace my tyres. I've got the OEM-spec Continental all round at the moment. My thinking was to get them replaced with Pilot Supersports but Michelin also recommend the Pilot Sport 4 for the Z4M. Having done a little bit of reading, it seems that rather than a replacement for the Pilot Sport 3, it is in fact, a replacement for all PSS sizes that aren't OE. My question is - has anybody fitted PS4 yet and if they have what do they think?

I haven't tried the 4's but a fair few have and have been impressed with them, the overal consensus is that the SS is still a better tyre for dry roads and the 4's took the edge slightly on a wet road.

Another tyre to consider is the Continetal Sports Contact 6, they are getting rave reviews at present too.

Ok thanks hopz121. I shall have a look at them too

There was a nice article I read on http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/ about them: http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/What-is-happening-to-the-Michelin-Pilot-Super-Sport.htm

In order to clear things up, we've been speaking with Michelin to find out exactly what's happening with everyone's favourite performance tyre.

Where does the Pilot Sport 4 sit?

- While Pilot Sport 4 replaces the Pilot Sport 3, it’s an improvement on the Pilot Super Sport, not a “new” Pilot Sport 3, in design and technology. In comparative testing in 18" sizes, Pilot Sport 4 outperforms the Pilot Super Sport in 99% of everyday situations, with the added benefit of 10-15% improved wear. The other 1% is on a dry track where the Pilot Super Sport would outperform the Pilot Sport 4 by a couple of tenths of a second around a long track. For more track focused track drivers we will expand the range of Pilot Sport Cup 2 over the next few years.

That's interesting, I assumed the 4 replaced the 3 as well. Are the Conti 6's not available in M sizes? I had the Conti 5's on my possible list for that reason. Others to consider are the Goodyear F1 Asymetric 3 and Dunlop Sport Maxx RT2

Had a quick look and from what I saw the CS6 is only available in 19" wheel size or bigger. Pity :(

I've gone with conti contact sport 6s and they are faultless for grip. Car feels so planted through the corners even on asphalt. If your going to pay the doh...... Go with the best in the game

Hi I fitted M PS4rs recently and have covered about 500 mls, so as yet not really had full experience. But so far I am impressed ,previously I had Vredstein Ultrac Vorti which I would swear bye. I bought M PS 4's not that I was disappointed at all by the Vredsteins but as the saying goes (grass is greener etc)
The michelin feel more planted on the road and somehow make car and tyres feel as one. So far I am very happy with the change. For me it was worth the little extra and I look forward to further motoring on them.

Surprised there is any supply of cs6 as they are still reasonably new.
The cs6 are still more in kin to all rounder rather than dry pss/cup, and the ps4 are an upgrade to to the PS3 which is what I have on my daily, can't fault them for sporty all weather ability though a bit noisy, which I think the ps4 addresses.

Nb. I think you can get pss in oem 18 sizes. 225/45, 255/40 although I went for 265/40.

A question for those who have the MPSS - have you gone for the XL version?

I've got a feeling my set are xl, I think they ride really well, bit can't compare to non-xl.

Hi, I done around 3k on mine and the amount of grip is amazing - probably the best tires I have had both in wet and dry conditions.

The above review- basically convinced me to purchase the,.

Yep, XL here too. I've probably only done around 1k miles on them, but so far they seem great :) I actually have an extra pair of fronts that I need to do something with at some point too.

My rear tires are XL and my front tires are not. Seems most sizes sold in the US are XL and just a few are SL.

What's the difference?
I really can't tell any difference but as I have been running the same combination of SS since 2010. 235/45-18(SL) front and 265/40-18(XL) on the rear. Those tire sizes don't have an option for SL or XL. If I want those size tire I get that combination of SL and XL so there is really no way to compare to anything else except after using Continental and Goodyear F1 tires I prefer the Michelin SS over any other tire setup that I have ever had.

XL is for extra load.
Apparently it handles better due to the reinforced sidewall.
I'm guessing this adds to the weight of the tyre?

Yes mine are XL, have covered a few more miles since my first post and I am impressed. great feeling on the road supreme confidence when cornering and Quiet as well. Recommended !
