Wax advice

Hi guys

I've always used zymol products in the past including glasuer wax. However my car is kept outside and I don't find this product to be especially durable and wondered if anyone could recommend a more durable product and hopefully cheaper (the zymol is getting a bit pricey now)

Cheers

Ioncoat Naviwax i really like...

Collonite 845 is also very good......

I do prefer the former though...

Thanks for that. I see its on flea bay for about £20 plus postage, is that the going rate? Or is there a better source.

I see its in light & dark so what would you recommend for Maldives blue as its a bit in between :)

Sorry, one other thing. Would I need to strip off the zymol or would this go straight on top?

If you want maximum durability then I'd recommend Fusso, this has a test durability of 12 months. It has sealant properties so you could still layer your other waxes on top for what ever desired look. You can buy from Nippon shine direct or soft 99 on ebay £20.

You would need to strip your current wax else it won't bond with the paintwork. Angelwax stripped ease will do this.

Ok thanks I'll have a look at that too

fusso's good but 12 months is very optomistic

It's all in the preparation, removing all contamination from the paintwork will aid the longevity. Applied Fusso to my brother in laws car 12months ago and there is still some sign of protection remaining.

no doubt prep is key but i call bullshit on anyone claiming to get that out of fusso without using some form of top up product in that time.
btw not knocking fusso its great for the price :)

I like Fusso too....

Its good, had 99 soft and king of gloss...

Never had 12 months though, i think 6 months is pretty good but i like to strip and wax about every 4 months anyway...Trying to time one just before winter...

I can't really give advice as a beginner at this detaiing malarkey but i can tell you the collinite 476s that i used on my 1st attempt went on easily buffed off easily and left a beautiful finish.. bargain at 15 quid on amazon

Did you strip the old wax or do any other preparation?

I used they clay mitt which as i understand will strip the old products and decontaminate the paint... farecla g3 mitt from halfords... highly recommended for ease of use

Another good shout would be Auto Finesse Tough Coat.
After prep, it's literally spray on, wipe over, allow it to haze, I left it for 30mins and then buffed off. Left it approx. 1hr and then re-applied, let it haze and then buffed off.

I got Oct - March protection with weekly washes of TFR. I had no degradation of it at all over the harsh winter months.

As others have said though, it's in the prep, that paint needs to be clean before any LSP hit's it. For this, you'll need AF Tough Prep which is basically a paint cleanser that contains no oils as Tough Coat is more of a sealant and NOT a wax.

I tried Fusso and didn't like the finish it gave so stripped it off and never tried it for longevity.

Some say Tough Coat doesn't give off a nice finish but I found that it looked beaut! Our RS Clio with 2 coats of TC from Oct '14. showing it's finish and beading which it's not renowned for.

Have you considered a sealant and then a wax? I went with Chemical Guys Jet Seal as a base followed by Chemical Guys wax, although as my Z sits outside I am considering Colonite.

Svissvax Shield. Supposed to contain Teflon or some such non stick potion. After experimenting with a lot of waxes this lasts the longest by far.

As stated previously, preparation is all and I find the best approach to be:

Wash
Clay
Wash
Dry
Svissvax cleaner (until squeaky clean)
Polish with Autoglym Super Resin Polish
Two coats of Svissvax Shield wax with another two coats on the forward facing panels (front bumper, front of bonnet, front of A pillars and backs of door mirrors).

The result is not as deep a shine as other waxes but it lasts a long time - up to a year or longer. Record for still beading water is three years on my brother's car. Summer kamakazi insects are also easily cleaned off.

I did try the Autoglym HD wax once - that struggled to last 4 months and was completely 'gone' after 6 months.
