My sons looking at replacing his wee polo 1.2. He's just started his apprenticeship at local BMW dealership & wants a new car. He doesn't drink, smoke so wants a deasant car. Thinking of a 1 series coupe but think insurance will be mental. He's been driving for 9 months & turns 19 in February. Going to wait till he has 1 years ncb fingers crossed. Also looking at a Ford Fiesta red edition if the 1 series is out the question. Anyone had similar issues?

Well I know what it was like for me as a young female driver with a brand new mini 13 years ago. It wasn't cheap then and I doubt it's got any better.

If it's going to be his car and he is the main driver it will be a killer. Unfortunately anything with turbos on which a lot of the newer engines have to try and make them more 'efficent' are a bit of a flag to insurance companies with young folks. As are premium badges.

Adding you and the Mrs will help lower the premium. Unfortunately you'll not know the kinda costing until you get some idea of quotes. He could even do that just now on a hypothetical not yet bought the car but seeing what the offering would be with 1 years NCD.

I know my cousin who's 22 has a 1.6 A3 TDi convertible, has 4 years NCD, lives in Curmunnock and pays £700 a year for her insurance. And she's been a student living at home.

Hopefully he'll get something sorted but I'm sure you'll make sure he doesn't make any rash decisions.

Just on comparison sites just now Angie, changed his birthday a few months. £4180 for a 118d coupe with a black box,lol he doesn't have one on his polo. £1100 for a fiesta red edition & that's a new car. No he's on his own now bought him his polo & paid the insurance for the last year so it's the big bad world now ! :D

Got a quote yesterday for a new fiesta red edition of £980 fully comp. also BMW 116d msport 15 plate £1100 very surprised at that. So he's driven the BMW & loved it,just waiting to test drive the fiesta & then he can make a diccissiion !

As a note for others who's youngsters are about to enter the driving world , my son kicked off on 10 month policy's that gave a yrs NCD after each term .
So a little over 3 years now in time term & he has 4 yrs NCD
Its a great way to get the bonus built quicker & now at 23 he pays £670 Fcomp on a Golf R32

No black box. As Andy says Kris is also on our Admiral multi car policy & has been given 1 years ncb after 9months of driving. Both cars mentioned are group 16 BMW & 18 fiesta.
