I'm happy it was just the key rather than the gm5, its more than likely my soldering skills (or lack of!)
Ill try cleaning up the pins in the door connector, failing that I will just bridge the wires to establish where the fault is

I will try have a look later and take some photo's, like you say someone could have tried to replace but with the wrong one. I assume there is no way to tell which one it should have other than to try them in the car?
in 2025 there is an invoice from bmw for roof not working (which was the motor sat in water) and a failed b pillar module and replacement airbag trigger module (2025). the glove box was removed when I got the car, I suspect to access the fuses for the roof.
I was unaware of the east anglia Z4...
the pairing didn't work, I tried all 3 methods listed and the locks didn't react.
can the GM5 module just be swapped and keys paired?
im only 20 mins down the road from you so would be handy if you have parts to try
