Here's a mystery

Hello all. For 2 MOT's now I've have had an advisory for oil mist on the gearbox, not this last one though. Had a look last week at the fill bolt to see what type it was and the box is almost dry of oil as though it had some but is now washed off. Got under today and removed the fill bolt and had a little dribble come out so put it back. Lovely and clear and smelt like the Hypoid 90 from old. Oil was replaced in 2018 55000 miles. I was expecting to add some but left it as it seemed okay. I had seen the car up on a ramp about a year after I bought the car and the box was oily but the mechanic said not to worry and keep an eye on it. I know that tyre shops used to spray oil on shocks to say they needed replacing, but an entire gearbox? Like I say it's a mystery. Mike.

Ha Ha. There was enough oil in the gearbox it seems, so the mystery is where did the oil come from.

Doesn't take a lot of oil to make a mess under a car. Perhaps the gearbox oil was overfilled and that leaked out a bit. Or they made a mess when they changed the oil.

Anywho, as long as theres oil in the gearbox, no more advisory, no problem.

Been a great car since I bought it from on here, all the things done that break over time and this one thing has been niggling me. But as you say maybe it was overfilled. How anyone could do that, I can't imagine though.

Yes it's a road worthy test, the last few years they seem to have added oil leaks. Suppose it's to do with dropping it on the road and causing an accident.

My mechanic replaced selector seal on the transmission before chaning transmission oil, as it was leaking a bit. It may be that one
