Z4 2.5i 2006 What price to sell?

I’ve recently had a problem where my car is rough idling and stalls occasionally when stopping at lights. Engine light has come on in amber and fault codes mention Vanos system issues.
Mechanic has informed me it will likely cost £1,500+ to repair so better off selling as it is.
Any advice on how to sell/what price to ask for Z4 2006 2.5i 93,000miles

I'd guess you'll maybe get around £3k for it without the fault, so... £1,500?

Might be worth looking into fixing it. Mechanic who says "you're better off selling it" just doesn't want to do the work. Shop around, you might get a better price. If you list the fault codes then others on here might be able to give some advice.

That sounds more like the idle control valve is stuck. I had the exact same issue and it was a £40 part and 3 hours with a socket set to fix it.

Does the car drive ok? Any other issues? Did you get your oil level issue sorted?

Price depends on how quick you want to sell it I guess!

Error codes are
2A9E canshaft sensor, inlet, synchronizatiom
2A82 VANOS intake
2A87 Exhaust VANOS, mechanism
2A98 Crankshaft-inlet camshaft, correlation

Looking at those codes looks like a combination of sensor issues which shouldn’t cost too much to resolve

There is no idle control valve on an N52.

Have you tried the basics such as replacing the VANOS solenoids? Would be a cheap and quick test.

Cheers everyone for the replies. I’m going to pay for a proper diagnosis from the specialist and go from there. The original mechanic made it seem as if it was almost certainly a £1,500+ repair based on the codes.
You’ve given me some hope that it may not be that expensive of a repair so worth me paying for the diagnosis.
Many thanks!

I had a thought that perhaps the oil was low. Using the electronic oil level check I get “Error Oil”. Annoyingly there’s not dipstick in this model. I took a gamble and topped it up with 1 litre and the car is no longer rough idling.
I’ll take it for a spin later to see if the stalling/rough idling is still present.
If they’re resolved then it could perhaps be a case of a faulty oil sensor not reading correctly and the oil becoming too low causing these issues?

Update:
Taken the car for a spin and seems to have its power back. No rough idling or stalling. The oil sensor is reading ‘error oil’ so i’m assuming the aftermarket sensor I installed last year was dodgy and I was low on oil, causing all the issues recently.
I’m now going to replace the oil sensor along with having a full oil change.

Does anyone know what the best oil sensor I can buy is? Cheers

That sounds promising. Given that the sensor you fitted seems to have failed I'd be inclined to buy from BMW if they don't want silly money.

Whoever thought doing away with a dipstick should be shot.
Apparently it was all to do with the vast majority of owners never checking their oil. Then by the time the 'low oil pressure' light comes on (which most have no idea what that means) it could be too late and damage has been done.

TBH I have seen a few cars with a dipstick that it was impossible to tell how much oil was in there (Mini R56 being the prime example IME. Absolutely terrible dipstick which is unreadable not helped by it being at such an angle that any oil is wiped down the shaft on the tube anyway).

The clever boffins at the manufacturers thought it better for the great unwashed if the car tells them if it needs oil and how much. So they designed 'puters to do it all for us.

Then they moved on to delete coolant temperature gauges, as these were deemed unnecessary. I would tend to agree on that one, but they should have replaced them with oil temp gauges instead (ala BMW until recently).

I have the full remit of gauges on my 'toy' car; coolant temp, oil temp, oil pressure and a dipstick. It's re-assuring to know what is going on in there at any time TBH.

I know exactly what you mean about the R56 dipstick as the former Mrs Tidy bought one at the launch event in 2006. Reading it was pretty much guesswork!

When BMW launched the E9* 3 Series in 2005 they gave them an electronic dipstick, electric water pump and no temperature gauge, which wasn't great when the water pump on my E91 died. :(

My E90 doesn't have a temperature gauge either, but for some reason E92 and E93 models do.

But TBF I've never had an issue with the electronic dipstick on my E90, E91 or either of my E86s, although I've had 2 dead water pumps!

I would guess the moving away from coolant temp gauges was due to the fact that most think when the gauge is at 'normal' they can then gun the engine, even though the oil takes miles further to get to the same temp? It was probably some litigation in the US where people where lunching engines cos the gauge said it was all fine!

But they could just have replaced them with oil temperature gauges. I'd rather have any sort of temperature gauge in my 330i than the poxy meaningless economy swingometer.

I think only BMW ever used those in analogue form. Very weird idea, especially as BMW always marketed themselves as 'the ultimate driving machine' which would lend itself to being performance orientated??
