Red Roof Light & Electrical Gremlins - Post Rain...

Hi All,

I've had some really weird happenings these last few days.

Amazingly on Tuesday, we actually had rain! Now it really wasn't much rain, but it did warrant me putting on my wipers which is where the first weird thing happened. The wipers came on, but appeared to have a mind of their own, with them stopping in the middle of the screen, and not responding to the stalk (this includes the jets not responding).

Between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, this rectified itself, and the wipers now work and continue to work perfectly and smoothly, with the washer jets returning.

Now the next weird set of events, I'm leaving work on Wednesday, and as I'm making my way down the street, the red roof light appears for just a second with a bong (on the screen you would usually see your gear etc). I haven't put the roof up or down in over a month, so that's odd for a start. In addition, the air-con didn't kick for around 10 minutes, and then came on in full force.

Apart from that the car drives and starts as sweet as a nut!

My first theory is the battery is on the way out, but the issues coinciding with the first lot of rain we've had in ages is making me question this.

I'm going to dig out my code reader, but I wondered if anyone has experienced something similar after a bout of rain.

Check the date stamped on the battery terminal, if it’s more than 5 or 6 years old it’s worth changing it as the E89 can be very temperamental with low voltage.
While you are there check the boot around the battery and roof motor for any signs of water, also check the little storage compartment on the left and below the floor trim on the right hand side, that’s where the roof module sits along with the PDC.

It's all looking peachy in here water wise, but you are absolutely right about the voltage, I purchased bimmerlink and my battery charge is only very low, as indicated by the app and the iDrive screen whilst I sat inside which just the electronics on scanning the codes.

All my codes appear triggered by points of severe undervoltage.

I'm going to take it on a long drive tonight, check my battery % again and if it's struggling to build/maintain charge I'll get a new battery ordered.

Have you got any battery recommendations assuming I needed a new one? I've been looking at Enduroline with their 5 year warranty, seems decent and well priced.

Yes pity on the Yuasa…good batteries…my choices would be Exide, Yuasa, Varta..tier 1..Bosch tier 2…

5 year warranty on a decent AGM battery on an e89 properly coded / registered should be trivial…

Going below 10-20% is the killer ..

I managed to find an Exide for a surprisingly good price? It all looks in order but I'll await your opinion.

Changing my battery later today, getting ahead of the game by pre-ordering my FRM repair on eBay.
