Brake pad warning intermittent

Hi there, today the brake pad warning light on my E85 2.5 M54 came on and off intermittently four times.
The front brake pads were replaced 2,000 km ago, and the rears 4,000 km ago.
A visual inspection through the wheel rims shows all four corners looking good, the pads have a lot of meat left.
I also touched all four brake calipers, and none of them were hot.
What could be causing this?

I wanted to check the error message, but of course I lost my K+DCAN cable. Just ordered another one

Must be a glitch. The wear sensor works by wearing away the plastic until it shorts the circuit. Not something that is likely to be intermittent.
Code reader will tell you if front or rear, then I think my first step would be to check, clean and reseat the plugs.

Woah! Hang on! I’m being thick!
That light also shows with low fluid level.
Check the reservoir. If it’s low then could have a leak or it may simply be the level dropping as the pads wear.

The German manual says you only get the parking brake symbol for brake fluid warning.

(English US manual didn't help much- they have a different warning light that just says "BRAKE" in America)
