Good news: nothing needs programming to the car. Fit the new sensors, run the reset from the iDrive/vehicle menu (tyre pressure → reset), then a ten-minute drive above walking pace and the car learns the new IDs itself. No dealer visit.
The wrinkle is the sensors, not the car. Genuine or OE-type (Huf/Schrader, correct part number) are fit-and-forget. Universal aftermarket ones come blank and must be programmed to the BMW protocol with a TPMS tool before they go into the tyre — any tyre shop does it in minutes, but fit them bare and you’ve got four dead sensors and a warning light. One check before ordering: region. US cars run 315 MHz, European 433 — the wrong one fits perfectly and never says a word to the car.
Since the tyres are coming off anyway: the batteries are sealed in, 6–10 years’ life. If one’s gone the rest are the same vintage — do all four in one hit.
