Good morning everyone, and thank you in advance for your interest.

I own a 2011 BMW Z4 sDrive23i E89. While driving, I hear a kind of metallic whistling noise, similar to the sound of a train passing on the tracks.

I had the car checked by a mechanic, and he told me that there are no mechanical issues.

What could it be? Could it be related to the seals or weatherstripping?

Thank you very much for your help.

I am sure mine does similar - but can only hear when roof down and all windows down, does sound like a metallic grinding like pads make against the disc - I did wonder if was one of the backing plates slightly bent and catching perhaps?

OP not been on since posting, wonder what it was. I think @NS66 has nailed it with the backing plates, particularly if they are crumbly.
Ive since checked mine - jacked each wheel and spun - no noise or play at all so dont think its the plate, wheel bearing or sticking pad.
Very strange
I am wondering could it be just wind noise? I have the 19" 326M Double Spoke - only hear it over 30. Will be trying some 18" wheels as a comparison soon so will report back.

Hi, sorry to hear about your problems.

Okay so you have a 'noise' coming from your car that is 'a kind of metallic whistling noise, similar to the sound of a train passing on the tracks.'
So unfortunately you do not mention when exactly this noise comes or under what specific conditions ..apart from 'when driving' which is when most metallic whistling noise, comes from :).....

"I had the car checked by a mechanic, and he told me that there are no mechanical issues."... Did this mechanic take the car out for a test drive to verify exactly where this noise was coming from ?.

Anyway, sounds 'metallic' this would indicate metal on metal . So lack of lubricant / worn parts/surfaces. As mentioned likley culprits to consider are wheel bearings , brakes/calipers. but also the diff bearings. An experienced mechanic on a testdrive would pinpoint the problem very quickly.

Whistling sound, or do you mean a annoying squeeling, that comes and goes depending on wheather you are using the brakes , turning a corner, or the pitch varies when you feather the brakes?

We could be looking at 2 different issues?

By the way has the car been modified or altered in any way?

I also drive a BMW Z4 sDrive23i E89, and the only weird noises to date are the left door mirror creaking when folding in/out and the electronic parking brake has a cute sound when using... not sure if this is a problem or a feature :
