Hi looking to buy an E89

I'm new to BMW but have spent a lot of time researching a car I'm looking to buy. It's a 2014 20i. It has Sapphire Black 19" alloys with run flat tyres and one of the rear tyres has low pressure. If I decide to swap to non run flats, are people generally interested in buying the run flats? I don't really fancy storing them. Thanks!

Very little interest in run flats you would be better holding on to them as a spare set to potentially put back on if you sell in the future.

Key thing to check is the rear wheel that's losing pressure - the BMW rear rims have a tendency to crack and although they can be repaired it's far from ideal as they often fail again.

Final thing - did your research extend to the timing chain guide?

Thanks, yes I've read about the rear rims and I'm planning on asking the garage to have them checked, also I've asked them to check the guide. It's had a stage 1 performance remap and I believe the guide would have had to be changed for that.

Thanks, this is one thing I didn't check for but because it's going to a mechanic to have a kind of squeal over 45mph (sounds like the air vents or could be roof seals at the front) , I've asked them for a trade quote for moving the motor/battery (the thing in the foam) up into the boot, and for replacement of the salmon relays. The roof works ok but if it's had water in the boot should I be concerned? I've also asked them at their own cost to clean the roof drains.

You can’t relocate the roof motor on an E89 only an E85

A remap is completely independent of any cam chain related matters

Wow ok I'd read they couldn't do it without, ok so this is not sounding great at the moment. I'll see what they say about how they can verify that it's been done. Previous owner said it had been done and provided detailed records of everything else but not for the chain guide which is probably the most important repair.
 
If your 'squealing' is a roof seal and it's letting in air, it will have been letting in water too if it's been like it a while. Check the interior footwells for any dampness, as well as signs of watermarks on the dash and A-pillar covers.

If you put up the reg number of the car the forum can have a look for any information on the car which may be relevant.

Thanks! It's looking like a stuck air vent at the moment but I'm awaiting details.

I've run a report on Carvertical and I've gone through the paperwork at the garage very carefully. Would the car reg give you access to anything I've not already seen?
 
They garage won’t check the timing chain, they will say it’s fine.

You'll have to check it.

If it’s been done, the chain guides will be white, not orange. You can take off the oil filler cap and look at them with a torch, or use your phone to take a picture with the torch on. That's how you verify.

Remap companies don’t care if it’s done or not.

Someone on here might know the car by the reg. not guaranteed of course, but you never know.
