Engine rebuild by specialist has turned into disaster. Your opinions welcome.

Now I don't have any power to my OBD port since returning from BMG garage so code readers will not work!

Fault found.
Fuses for OBD 44, 56, 58 are fine
Pin 16 had no supply. It is a red/bk cable.
Red/bk in fuse panel (25 radio/instruments.) was blown.
Replaced with another 7.5A, OBD working now.

Take it to a top tier outfit. Describe your problems and ask for a catalogue/written report of issues. It'll help you immensely with both compensation and justice.

It won't be cheap, but you'll know exactly what's what and will help your following path.

Did you pay by credit card? Charge back.

Yes, I am seriously considering that. This garage needs to be recognised officially for poor service.

No I didn't. Other people suggested that. Unfortunately by debit card.
Lessons have been learnt the very hard way.

This thread is very depressing in more than one way.
@Bluebottle you obviously have a very soft spot for this car. It's such a shame that you entrusted it's repairs to a garage who obviously couldn't care less about that. How were you to know? It's a lottery.
It's also a shame that these type of things happen more and more in modern Britain. People's attitudes to their work seem to just be how much money they can make for the least effort and minimal skill. I see it daily in my business. I tried to fight it for years, but no-one cares, so have given up. I became a lone voice, which is no fun.
Poor workmanship is the new norm; mediocre is the new good and excellent doesn't seem to be comprehended anymore.

There are always exceptions but they seem to be few and far between.

Thanks Pondy. Like I have said before, you have the skills and drive to create your stunning freelitre/250 and it is a credit to you, so I value your opinion. If only I had the double garage that I have coveted all my life, things would have been so different. I really dreamed of having a smooth E39 with a silky smooth and quiet engine and found it hard to be more pragmatic and give up this car. But I cannot turn back time just make the best of what I have now.
It isn't that I have spent/wasted so much money, but that I have been deceived so badly by a business that has no right or skill to work on and ruin people's pride and joy.
I shall probably spend more money and time getting this 5series right because that will bring me more satisfaction than just selling it and walking away.
Man, have I have learnt a valuable lesson.

You might as well get it sorted now. You are in too far not to IMHO. Then hopefully in a few years you may forget some of the pain.
You also shouldn't have to 'learn a lesson' with companies who, supposedly, know what they are doing. It's just not right imo.

From Pondys post about those we have lost (sorry in my 18 months here, I did not have the pleasure of knowing them)

Time passes so quickly and the older you get the faster it seems to go.
As RONK said ,”don’t worry about wasting money, worry about wasting time.”

I need to apply this to my E39 and prioritise my wife, children and home; all of it's problems are currently taking over my life.
E39s are special but there are plenty of them for sale. I will look around for the right one in a couple of years.
