What have you done to your car today?

Laid out all of the parts to rebuild the rear end + front strut assembly, ready to split them into the parts needed for each section of the car/job. (Just waiting on a couple of parts from LLLparts and my Eibach springs are still in the garage loft, but otherwise that's all of it!)
Thats exactly what I need to do.....hmmmm need to purchase some time

Changed the front bonnet badge as it it was looking rather tacky. Very simple job using the front grill off process to get to the two holding nuts/caps - thank you all "how-to" posters - just helps all of us and if I was ever to do something that hasn't been documented here, will do to help all fellow E85/6ers.

Picked it up from RBM Hampshire after an oil service, new rear brake pipes in kunifer and a fresh MOT. :D

Shame it got advisories for a light mistiing of oil on one shock and a perished fuel cap seal. :(

Fitted another Chinese made stop / brake light in the boot.
The last one I bought (also made in China) has lasted seven years until a work colleague pointed out to me yesterday morning that not all the LEDs were lighting up.
That one cost ÂŁ26 in 2019. This new one cost me ÂŁ15 from UK based upgradeautoparts and it arrived in less than 24 hours after I ordered it on ebay.
How’s the fitment? Need one myself. Thanks!

The fitment was spot on apart from not being quite flush with the boot lid. The Chinese made item which it replaced was the same, and the original (?) which that one replaced had split down the middle, possibly as a result of the nuts being over tightened? So I just accepted it and made sure not over tighten the three nuts as this will probably lead to the lens cracking at some point. The lens does come with a rubber seal but does NOT come with the springs and nuts so make sure you don't lose these. Also it's worth getting a set of long reach sockets for the job.
I thought that the connector was not going to work when I compared it to the "original" but it plugged in with a reassuring click.
It's been a couple of weeks since I fitted it and as far as I know it's still working ok. I'll try to check later on and I'll get back to you if there are any issues.

Now it has an MOT I treated it to a 2 bucket wash and replaced two wheel centre caps that were past their best.

The front roundel was looking a mess too.

I had a new one I bought last time Vertu Motors had 20% off their Ebay listings but when I popped a kidney grille out there weren't any riv-nuts on the back!

Luckily I had one of those 70mm stick on emblems so I've put that on for now and it looks better. I'll fit the OE part once I've got some riv-nuts.

Just checked that the LED light strip is working ok and all of them are lighting up . I know it's only after a couple of weeks but hopefully they'll last for five or six years by which time the unit will have started to dull anyway :)
Many thanks, that’s really helpful. Just to check before ordering, is it actually red? In some of the photos it looks like a smoked red, I’m ideally after just a plain OEM red. Cheers 👍

I see what you mean regarding the colour. If we're looking at the same pictures on the UpgradeAutoParts ebay store, the sixth picture down shows the LEDs lit up and looking very yellow / orange in colour. In reality LED array looks the same (crimson ?) red as the two brake lights either side.
I don't think they're doing themselves any favours using that photo.

Not done yet but planning to do, maybe tomorrow - vanos seal replacement.
How much time do I have to plan to take?
Any special advice from vanos veterans? :)

Got my hands on some brushed aluminium dash and centre console trim (and was surprised that it's actually metal) thanks to Martin, that I've wanted to replace the silver plastic poverty items in my car. Fitted the two upper pieces this evening, it looks like a proper faff to do the centre console so will wait for a free day to get that done.

'Actually metal' has caught my eye here!

I’ve just fitted the much-recommended brushed aluminium Storm Motorwerks gear knob and handbrake handle, and it’s made me notice that the factory “brushed aluminium” dash trim - at least that’s how it’s listed against my VIN - seems to be silver-coloured plastic rather than actual metal.

At the risk of adding another item to my wish list… is the trim set you’ve fitted actually real metal? It looks very similar to what I have already. Thanks!

Yes it is metal. I know cos Hollie got it from me. The very basic trim in the cloth interior cars is only plastic. Characterised by having no arm rest around the handbrake.
If you want to be sure what yours is, the piece around the light switch unit prises off very easily.

I’m surprised BMW went to the expense of making the tooling for plastic trim in addition to the other options. I presume the Piano Black must use the same mould and it’s just finished differently.

Not been on here for a while.
This weekend I've cleaned up and sprayed a full set of brake calipers in estoril blue and hung them out to dry and order frentech caliper rebuild kits.
On the 2.0 I've replaced both pre cat lambda sensors with used ones from another 2.0 manifold I have. I've also done a oil and filter change, replaced both o rings on the vanos solenoids, and given the engine block a good clean from the front and underneath with brake cleaner and a carbon fibre cloth, powerhosed the reinforcement plate and undertray.

Took it for a spin. All good. Will hopefully pass the MOT now.1000045423.jpg1000045422.jpg1000045418.jpg1000045419.jpg
