What oil type? 04? 01?

2.5 N52. Just started carping about adding 1l. What oil is best? What is to be avoided? 100k+ engine, 5w-40?

Do I throw the whole litre in, or just pour half and wait/see?

5w30 or 5w40 for me. I keep a 1 litre bottle out of the recycling that I use to measure out the right amount before chucking it in.
 
I'm pretty sure Shell Helix Ultra is what BMW dealerships have been using for quite a while, but I can't see if on the back of the bottle if it says it is LL01 or LL04 compatible. Shell definitely make one that meets LL04 which would be fine.

BMW petrol engines aren't particularly fussy, a lot of the LL spec'ing was for the incoming range of high performance Diesels 20-odd years ago. There's almost no instances of oil related engine problems (short of not having any) on N52s so there's not even any point buying a brand name. I've used Halfords, Triple-QX and the like (correct spec, natch) for donkey's years to hyper mileages on various BMW engines.
