My 2010 Z4 E89 30i (very long) story

Hello all Elliot here,

Got a very long post, sorry about that!

I recently decided to get my first car. I had a budget of 4k max, but ideally lower.

Browsing autotrader I came across a 2010 Z4 30i for 2.5k, but it had a few advertised problems. The problems being, it didn't have a functional reverse gear, the battery was dead, and the window had been left open for almost a year.

So of course I did the reasonable thing and sent a deposit of £500. After a few weeks I went to pick it up with my dad.

On arrival it was all as described. Got a new battery in, and closed the window. Tried to start it but it had no fuel. No problem, we first gave the interior a vinegar shower, and then towed it out the driveway.

The next problem, we started to winch it onto the trailer and realised the front was way too low to clear it.

After getting my phone camera into the wells I could see both the front springs had snapped. So we put it on the trailer backwards instead.

On the way back, we stopped to put a bit of fuel in it. It started first try and sounded great.

The next task, fixing the car. First issue, parts. I managed to get a used gearbox off eBay for £300, some used front Bilstein B8s with eibach springs for £140, cream trim and heated sport seats for £150, a new luk flywheel and clutch for £450, Bolts from BMW £90, and a BNIB Car play unit for £250.

After all these parts had arrived I went back down to get started on fitting everything. This all started on a Thursday afternoon.

Day 1 and 2: To begin with we got both the fronts replaced. No problems here apart from the wheels being extremely fused which required me to lie down and kick them many times 😂.

Day 3: Next challenge, getting the gearbox out. Thankfully, my dad has a lot of tools so it went onto a funny seesaw car lift. The under protection then got removed.

Day 4: Next task, the exhaust. Now I got to the manifold and couldn't do anything with them as they looked like this

But I asked my dad and he managed to get them out in 15 minutes or so, no clue how he did it.

After the exhaust was removed, the propshaft, gearbox, clutch, and flywheel all came out no problems.

Next issue, there were a few leaks including the rear main seal.

Thankfully, I had purchased a spare one for just this occasion. Now, I'm mostly going off ISTA and YouTube videos. I had no clue how to get the new one in properly without the special tool ISTA tells you to use. After trying to get it in with a rubber mallet, old seal, and a socket I accidentally bent the seal.

Day 5: I called up the local dealership and had the pleasure of getting robbed £37 for an OEM one. This time, I used the old seal, and tapped the new one in extremely carefully over an hour. It felt like it wasn't moving at all, but it finally got seated (I hope, I'm still not sure haha).

Next steps, putting the new flywheel and clutch in. I accidentally ordered a normal alignment tool that didn't fit with the SAC. Ordered the new alignment tool next day

Day 6: Next small issue, didn't have a big enough bit to remove the plate so had to Amazon next day it haha.

Day 7: Now came the biggest issue, getting the replacement gearbox in. Now I've never done this before, and after jacking the gearbox up, I was having trouble getting it seated. I finally realised the engine was tilting forwards due to the lack of gearbox weight.

I had no clue on how to solve this and after watching a few YouTube videos I worked out I needed to jack the front of it up with something to get it to tilt back down. So here you have my solution haha.

This worked fantastic and the gearbox seated and I bolted it in.

After connecting the gear selector I gave it a test. Success! All the gears worked.

The home stretch. The MOT got booked on for the next day, it had to pass as I had already taken too much time off work.

I spent that evening connecting everything back up, and torquing it all down (apart from the top gearbox bolts, nightmare fuel). Replaced the oil, and filters too.

Day 8: Went for the MOT and it passed successfully!

150 miles into my journey home, I had a low oil warning telling me to fill up 1l. I had definitely put 6.5l in so i found this strange. I put in another 1.5l and it's told me it's fine for the last 300 miles now. Not sure what happened haha.

Finally got the seats in yesterday along with 4 pilot sport 5 tyres from the curent Costco deal!

Anyway, if you read this far thanks and I'm happy to join the club!

If anyone has any advice on getting the heated seats wired up that'd be great though. I know I'm missing the loom but I'm not sure what exactly I need to buy to get them going.

This is great!

Incredible work, but who left it with the window down for a year?

It looks amazing in the first shot where it’s slammed. Whats next to do?

Thanks both!

I believe after the reverse gear went, the window was left slightly cracked without the guy realising, then the battery died and he left it haha.

Next on the list is to replace the rear stock suspension with b8s and eibach springs to match the front. Very short on money after all that though, so it'll be a while.

I did want some new alloys, but there's no chance I'll have enough to do that soon.

great story, watch the low oil thing, were you parked downward on a hill? mine use to do that if I parked it nose down on the drive and then on the flat it would disappear, danger is you then overfill it with oil. Great car for not a lot of dosh, even has iDrive well done. Dave (Anubis Zed) is your E89 electrics wizard 🪄

That's a fantastic first post Elliot.

It's great to see an unloved car getting brought back to health and as a 30i seems to be quite a rare model it really deserved to be save!

Thank you!

It started at about 100 miles while driving, I checked on flat ground before filling it with more though. I put in the last of the 4l jug bringing it to 8l total. It's not moved for a few hundred miles so it seems ok now thankfully.

I was getting a dme oil level fault though, but I've not looked into it too much yet as it seems to be ok now.

Sadly no idrive, just the 3rd party android controller one. Might remove it and put the standard storage one back in as I don't really use it haha. I've seen and read some of Dave's stuff, super helpful!

Thank you! It was a fun project, I was really hoping for a 30i when I was looking, got very lucky to find it. Just thankful my dad is very into cars too and had most the tools to be able to fix it!

Wow. First car and you have done all that? Most excellent.
There is hope for the human race after all if (some of) the younger generation has this kind of attitude.

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I hope you have named your E89 'Lola'.

Thank you, I've always enjoyed fixing things, and on a budget often required haha. Though it definitely would've been a lot more challenging if my dad didn't help out with trailering it and having the equipment to do the job.

I was thinking more along the line of LOADZ of oil leaks 😂

Great job, well done.

I’m out of touch with E89s - how much is a working 2010 30i worth vs your expense so far? I imagine you’ve saved a big chunk of money, as well having the satisfaction of saving this car?

Welcome Elliot 🙂
That is one heck of a first post and a hugely impressive amount of dedication from you ( and support from your dad) for your first car!
Your car (barring the now unusual suspension setup 😉) is worth a heck of a lot more than you paid, including all the parts.
I will show this to my lad and see if he is going to be so determined with his first car in a year or so!

Thank you everyone, didn't expect so many responses!

Thanks! Honestly I have no clue. My total for the car and parts to get running excluding the android unit and seats came to around 3.5k, I think a working one would probably be around 5.5k ISH (Mine is very base spec, dimming mirror, auto wipers, AC). But I've not really seen any E89 30i around to confirm this. But I have the big positives of knowing the rear main seal, flywheel, and clutch have all been replaced, and of course the satisfaction.

Kudos to you. And your Dad too.

Any chance you can ask him where he got that tilting lift from? Cheers
Thanks! It's this one. Although a few things with it, because it slides in from the side, the car sits a bit too low to fit. To solve this we just jacked the opposite site up a little and it went under fine after. Also it's not quite long enough to fit on the jacking points so it was on the sills. Otherwise, very helpful tool allowing a much more comfortable experience.

Thanks! Yeah, it does look a little funny right now. My dad is changing to coilovers on his 28i when he has time, he said I could have his msport rears when he does. So that'll do for now 😂.

Haha, I can't help myself when I see a good deal. There would've been a lot less pressure if I didn't live a 5 hour journey from my dad though. Taking the train back didn't seem like a very fun prospect!

Welcome to the group! Fellow newbie here and this was a great read. Love to see you bring this back to life with your dad. Just goes to show what a bit of hard work can achieve and this car is now ready to be enjoyed and has sentimental value too. Nice one! 👏
