Smart top module e85

These are currently on sale. Eur 169. I purchased one and this is how the roof should have been from factory. No affiliation just making sure people know.

If I didn't have a GapTech I would have certainly gone for this one at this price as the functionality is far richer.

Wasn’t planning to buy this, but couldn’t refuse... Be aware that shipping is a bit steep (45 EUR to Netherlands).

Yeah, I got stung with another 70 eur import/tax duties. Makes the total come close to 285 eur. Not bad seeing the normal price, and functionality compared to competing products. But be aware when seeing the sale price what is added on top.

Unfortunately just missed the opportunity to send it to a US friend who is visiting here at the moment, that would have saved about 100 eur or so in shipping and taxes.

Installed it today, a bit harder than expected. The wires are short, room is limited, so a lot of fiddling and wriggling around to connect it all . But it works, and is very convenient!

I'm not sure I understand the benefit of this device. My E85 already features top down from the key fob, and putting the top down while in motion (with wind pressure on it) is not something I'd ever do...
Maybe I'm missing something?

The benefits are debatable indeed. My car also already had the option coded in to open/close the roof by pressing and holding the key button.

The advantages of the module are:
  • One touch open/close of the roof using the button on the dash, no need to hold it.
  • Shorter press of the key to open/close roof remotely, no need to hold it.
  • The roof operation doesn’t stop when turning off the car.
  • Operation of the roof while in motion. With the way the E85 roof folds in/out (it does fold up on itself, instead of more rotating up- and backwards as most bigger convertible roofs do), I feel the wind pressure should be quite limited. For safety I have set the limit to 20 kph (although once it has started you could go faster), and would recommend only doing this while driving on smooth surfaces.
  • It is my daily and regularly drive longer motorway distances, the comfort indicators (tap for 3 blinks) are in that use quite convenient to have when changing lanes, merging in/out. On the pre LCI cars I believe you otherwise need to fit a new light module and do some coding, so that offsets some of the costs.
  • And there are some tweaks, like coming home lighting, hazard indicators when using the roof remotely, postion of the windows after opening the roof.
So it adds quite some convenience, but it is certainly in the ‘luxury/not essential’ category. For the 169 EUR it good value in my opinion, with the added 115 EUR shipping and taxes less so. But still fairly priced taking in account competing products, and functionality offered.

Thanks so much for listing those benefits!
I could see the benefit of your #1,3, and the windows part of #6.
I got the comfort blinkers feature (#5) with the installation of my BlueBus Bluetooth unit in my '05 and yes, that's a nice feature.
Thanks again.

Well it might be luxury, but it was very convenient rolling to a traffic light after exiting the motorway today, to already drop the roof with a quick touch of a button, and let it continue retracting while slowly accelerating again as the light turned green.

It makes the top so much more useable in daily use. Expensive, but certainly a purchase to consider!
