Demand - whilst I would imagine that diesel cars are used far less for daily commuter transport than petrol (especially compared with 15 years ago), haulage and farming use almost nothing else. Both are inefficient and highly consumptive, and the former runs 24h.
It’s the same in Australia - haulage companies and farmers with storage capacity are stock-piling. I have a patient who has taken 18 articulated trucks off the road because his customers are reluctant to cover the increased cost of fuel and he’s exhausted his supply of diesel purchased before prices increased.
I assume that anything British is innately of higher quality and so commands a premium.
Besides, isn’t BP an abbreviation for “Anglo-Persian Oil Company”, an entity created specifically to exploit a nation with an abundance of oil? That backfired more than once over the last century!

I can't see the yanks putting up with petrol at over $8 a gallon for long. That is almost the same as the UK, which we pay about 90% tax on.
Even the red neck MAGA Trump supporters won't like paying that for their 10mpg V8 pick ups (to keep all their guns in)!
Hopefully the pressure from this alone on Trump may be enough for him to change his mind about his pointless war.

And yes, the entire American lifestyle and economy are based on driving, and contingent on cheap petrol. No cheap petrol, no apple pie. But what can we the people do? Unless cholesterol does its job, Trump will be a charlatan president until January 2029. The whole world is paying the price for electing a con man.

(Although it is odd how, even allowing for the wrong sized gallon, a light oil producing nation with less tax on fuel than we have is paying more per fluid bushel. (And, really oddly, if I go to the pub the cost of a pint of beer is enough to buy over four litres (that's 4 liters in American units) of petrol gas. And petrol lasts me longer than beer.))
