The best car in the world... and a Bugatti Veyron

I really don't get all the fuss over the Z8. Is it just because they didn't sell many (cos they were far too expensive) and are therefore very rare?

They actually look a lot like a Z3 (not mine though) and those are far from pretty IMO.

The Z8 was for me one of those never meet your heroes car. Saw one in person in the BMW museum last year and the bubble burst, it was not what I expected.

Rarity + Bond movie = desirable

I don't mind the view from the rear, but the front is a bit ugly, and in the photo above the wheels look comically big for the size of the car.

I definitely prefer the Z8 to a Veyron, but IMHO it certainly isn't "the best car in the world"!

Great engine, but the styling not for me. I’d have an M3 CSL, MC & MR and an E39 M5 for what these cost now.

I know these cars quite well as I have been looking for one for a while. They are MUCH better looking in the flesh. They are beautifully made, not run of the mill, not an ordinary BMW (so ordinary BMW prices do not apply - think CSL/M1 etc), the interior is to die for, it has a great M V8 engine, better steering than the equivalent M5, and holds the road very well. Think of it as a hot rod and it’s there. As an equivalent to a Boxster, no, but it was never meant to be.

Both are very beautiful cars in their own way. If someone was going to give me one for free (tax, insure and fuel it for me as well) then i would take the BMW, its just more beautiful.

The problem with the z8 is that the ones for sale are the ones that have been on sale for years (really in some cases), the fuel economy is woeful, and the cost of repairs is wallet busting. You really do need to want one….

Thanks, I suppose it is slightly cheaper than my house was!
Yeah but your house price will keep increasing. Z8s have plateaued at £250,000 for years and probably won't rise any further cos they have been way overpriced for years. In fact they were overpriced when new, and nothing has changed.

Pondy you are being a grumpy person again. Of course Z8s won’t shoot up in value - rarely does anything in this sector. Only Countachs, rarer Ferraris, etc suddenly go from being relatively affordable (£200k) to stratospheric (£1m plus). But Z8s will continue to trundle along at the £175k to £300k mark for a while. And are unlikely to come down to normal BMW values ever. Obvs you need to want one but lots of people in the world (Germany and US) do and the love them. It’s why an Alpina Roadster made £400k only just recently. Just because you can’t understand the attraction doesn’t mean they are over valued. They have always been undervalued in terms of the engineering etc. My i8 is the same - lots of people saying “how crap” until they drive one.
