Best Oil For Me?

I have the E89 35i and it is currently stage 1 MHD, it’s at 88,000 miles and I do the occasional track day and also have a Europe road trip coming up, I drive fairly spiritedly, i currently use 5W-30, but I have read that maybe 5W-40 or even 0W-40 would be best, what do you think?

For you..5w40 meeting API spec API-SN+ or better ..ideally SP..

5k oil change interval

Mahle or Mann filter

Agree with B21, 5W40 Fully Synthetic is the way to go with higher milage cars.

Thank you, what makes you advise with 5w40 over 0w40 out of curiosity?
For Uk climate 0W-40 is unnecessarily thin unless the formulation does better than a 5w-40..if the car was a summer only toy I’d go for a 10w-40…everything is a compromise…

N54 works hard and needs as much protection as it can get…you want a low volatility oil with low ash…

Premium ester or pao formulations are best…

The cold (first figure) is the important one IMO. I was advised to put 5w40 in my old M54. But the engine is very low mileage and I get very high oil pressure when cold, then it settles when the oil reaches temp, as the '40' is correct for the engine at normal temp.

The theory of using a thicker oil at cold temps is that it will give a higher pressure, so a 'worn' engine will allow it to lubricate better, cos it's being pumped around better. That's how I understand it anyway.

This sounds perfect then for my N54 which is 88,000 miles

And the fact mine is stage 1/1+ with mhd won’t change it, 5w40 is still best? Also I plan to do stage 2 with downpipe on MHD in coming months, will 5w40 still be the best one to use?

Yes yes

Just don’t thrash car or lug it until oil reaches 80c
