Updated digital cluster with integrated car play…the jury’s out!

Looks like a warm over of the ubiquitous Chinese digital cluster..a version of which fits E89s..

Some extra displays…some none G29 faux copies.

The limitations and practicality of the CarPlay addition leaves me wanting to..can’t really see anyone using it..

But heh..it’s another goody.IMG_3965.jpeg

I love the way that your maps show in the central portion of the screen, and that your music options show as well. But I feel they should have sorted the audio side of it properly before releasing it. They could have had it as the mmi box and feed the idrive screen as well and export audio properly.

I had an Audi A7 Quattro with inbuilt map display in the instrument cluster and that was superb…this just seems like another tacky Chinese half baked idea..

I guess you could have two iPhones ..one feeding this and one doing the music to square the circle..

Ergonomics wise it’s a crap place to have the map compared to higher up on the central dash IMHO anyway ..your eyes are well off the road..

I was loaned a brand new 5 series from BMW last year and it had the new style cluster with the maps on it, same as the G29 Z4. I think it worked very well, no different than looking at your speedo, but a lot better than glancing over to the centre of the car for the current iDrive screen. Saying that I think HUD is a far better position, but then you don't want too much info there.

Obviate personal thing ..maybe body shape…personally I find the E89 cluster well below my eye line and much worse than glancing at the eye Drivewise..for me takes much longer to move from road view / cluster / road view than road view / idrive / road view

But if it works for you…

I suspect it you cluttered the HUD with lots of stuff it would similarly turn into an ergonomic nightmare..

TBF, I have no problem glancing over to my iDrive screen.
And I agree, a decent HUD just needs speed and road speed (signs) and if you want Nav in it then just the turns, just like if you use iDrive in split screen and the directions come up in the small part.
