Matt’s Road & Track Coupe - Dec-25 update: Cobra Nogaro chairs

Noco mounted now, I used high density foam to keep things reversible. I like to be able to refit a standard battery in case I find myself in a pickle, so terminals and mounting retain that option.
The battery tie down bar has a strip of thick rubber underneath it so that it doesn’t cut into or wear the foam.

With the lithium battery saving substantial weight and seats set to achieve the same if I can figure out how to mount them, wheels were the next obvious port of call.
So today I have ordered some new track wheels, I have used Bola flow-formed wheels before and happily they were generous enough to offer a material discount on already very well-priced wheels for another set.
I went for the FLB in 17x8, which come in at under 8kg per wheel.

Ooh I can imagine the space would be really valuable in an //M!

The downside of the Noco is although it’s got big cranking power, it has a much smaller capacity, so could catch you out depending on how the car is used.

Seeing as I have a full size front wheel as a spare in the boot for when I do trips in Scotland the space saving would be fantastic.

But as my car often sits for weeks at a time, especially over winter, it doesn't look like it would be a sensible choice sadly. :(

I best go back and fix the broken YouTube links, but first another little update on the project... more vids to follow, but I'm not quite there with them yet.

So I came away from Blyton Park encouraged, things were moving in the right direction! The car was slowly but surely becoming more capable at the track, though it still didn't shine in the way the MR2 and MX5 do. The rear felt more stable, not showing any signs of the dynamic rear toe I had previously experienced at Cadwell, it felt less understeery, but still a bit inert compared to others, delivered promising pace and at this point the weak link was very clearly the standard seats and belts.

I still wanted the car to feel sharper and more responsive though, it continued to feel like there was a filter and a delay between driver input and car reaction, maybe the EPS is a limitation that can't be worked around, maybe a hydraulic PAS conversion is the answer... but of course I want to play around with it some more and try to get it driving how I want without.

I'm a little averse to changing the steering, mostly as I don't want to add points of failure and I don't want to introduce unnecessary parasitic drag, belt driven PAS. I've seen some testing on a more modestly powered MX5 and the losses were 3bhp ave., 5bhp peak straight wheels and 6 bhp ave. 12 bhp peak with lock on, so they are material, especially when on a race track.

So, more responsive, a bit pointier front end and less push on corner exit desired... MORE STIFFNESS! 😅

I moved to a 10kg/mm linear front spring, up from 8kg/mm and up to a 14kg/mm linear rear spring, up from max 11.5kg/mm progressive KW rear spring. The front was very simple indeed, I've had them off and swapped a bunch of times, but the rear introduced a bit of a problem, thankfully one I caught sight of before fitting. With a short enough spring to give a sensible ride height, the spring would be loose at full droop and with a long enough spring to remain attached to the car at droop the ride height would be ridiculously high.
I played around with helper springs, but to get them to work I would need a really short rear main spring, and was concerned it wouldn't work properly, so I searched around and found some extended top hats that would, by bastard engineering, reduce maximum droop.
The KWs have enormous droop, so I don't anticipate a problem in reducing it modestly, but we'll see how it drives!!

I've done an evening at Cadwell with the new spring rates and it felt it's best yet, it was quite a wet start, drying as the evening went on and I got lots of track time. Again the rear end felt stable, so hopefully I've cured the unruly rear and the front end felt improved. Responsiveness was improved too, but the seats really are the weak link now, even in not quite dry conditions. Pace was good though and for something modest looking, it punched well-above it's weight at the track, attracting some admirers and kind comments on the way.

With the car working fairly well on track and lapping at a decent pace, the standout weakness was the oem Sport seats, even augmented by the excellent CG Lock on the seatbelt.
I had previously bought some Corbeau RBs, which are well bolstered recliners, but when mocking them up in the car it became clear it would be difficult to find an optimal seating position due to their size and the limitations of the Z4 cabin.
I have also been really mulling over the possible addition of harnesses and a rear cage, but I REALLY didn’t want to make the car a chore to drive by feeling like a pure track car. I didn’t want it to be loud and rattly, with loads of road noise and I like the feel of the car with a complete interior.

In the end I treated myself to a pair of my favourite seats, that I have quite literally been eyeing up for years, Cobra Nogaros.
Before pushing the button I managed to get a ride in a pair of of them at Cadwell (thanks Josh) and being on A052 tyres the pace was swift enough to give me the confidence I needed that they would do the job without needing harnesses.

I really like the look without harness slots and in the half leather hopefully they look like something you’d find in a hypothetical Z4 CSL…

Mounting them was an utter chore… it almost always is with seats!!.. I could have made life so much easier for myself by buying posh mounts, but you can easily drop nearly a grand on the flipping things and that pays for a Nurburgring trackday!!

I had some fairly generic bases and side mounts already, so set about the process of mocking up, marking, chopping and repeat, until they’re now perfectly mounted for me.
I’ve omitted rails as it’s just myself and my brother who drive it and we have the seat in the same place and I was keen to get them as low as possible. They’re at least an inch lower that the Sport seats and have a touch more rake - perfect!

Most importantly they’re tremendously supportive, give a much better connection to the car, so you feel much more of what the car is doing through the hips and shoulders, are actually MORE comfortable than the Sport seats due to the thicker base cushions and allow easy use because of the low leg bolsters.
In addition they also look dead sexy!! 😬
I think I’m going to dye the logo and stitching grey with a fabric pen as I’d like to make them look a bit more subtle. I’ll have my steering wheel trimmed with grey stitching too, to tie it all together.

Ooh, nearly forgot, weight… a key part of the exercise!.. I lost 18kg across the two seats, so about a 40% reduction. 👍👍

Matt I’m sorry I’m late to this thread

Epic read!!

I think you are only up the road from me- happy to help with anything that needs another pair of hands?

Also next time you go to cadwell let me know I’d love to take the M round for a proper blast. Love the circuit but not had the M on it yet

Have a good one!

Great to make your acquaintance Stuart, no doubt I will have seen your car about!

I'll drop you a message

Seats look fantastic. They are such a good match for this car, on paper - the only thing that's been putting me off is the surprising lack of examples of it having been done before!

I see you don't need rails but did you consider the E46 sliders kit (which looks to be a drop-in fit)? I'm amazed they've only saved 18kg, tbh, when the stock seats are ~28kg each.

Yeah I would agree, they're just right for these cars, I'm sure we'll see more and more fitted!

I did look at the various mounting options, but I felt that to get the position right (as low as possible and with lots of rake), I would end up chopping up the Cobra mounts in much the same way as I have the generics I already had. I have cut clearance towards the back of the base so that the 'bum' of the seat can sit below the base and the Cobra Nogaro mounts look like I wouldn't get the amount of rake I like (the front of the side mounts are fairly low).
Not to mention the £660 cost! 😰

Regards weight, I think I did a poor job of weighing the standard seats previously, when I weighed again they were 22-23kg including the bases. The Nogaros with sidemounts, bases and seatbelt receivers (F56 Mini) are ~13kg.

To my great excitement I booked a trackday at the ring next year, I really can't wait! So the Z4 needs to be in perfect health by early July...

This little lot should help ensure as much, I have been adding bits to the list for a while and took the opportunity to order it in the Black Friday sale.

IMG_2049.JPEG

We've got a clutch kit, water pump and pretty much complete coolant system (I bought a rad too, but that's in a different box), new top mounts, new bottom arms (also not pictured) and lots of other odds and ends.

I also bought some Nankang CR-S 225/40/18 tyres for the trip, which will go on my 441m wheels. I've not used them before and whilst they're not the best (A052), they should have decent pace in the dry, not try to kill me if it's wet and have reasonable road manners. This set are 2024 dated, so were roughly half the price of a set of A052s and should be fairly durable from what I've heard of CR-S'.
I'm not set on being the fastest thing on track, so stuck with a modest width, though I would like to find a second pair of rear 8.5" 441m wheels so that I've got them all mounted on 8.5" rims.

Another part of the jigsaw, have been struggling to source one of these on its own rather than as a front and rear kit.
Larkspeed sorted the job, 21mm adjustable H&R rear anti-roll bar to go with the big Hotchkis front bar.

This is rare in that it’s a nice tubular manifold that fits the UK 3.0 si, as most will know, the current aftermarket offerings require material modification to fit on RHD cars.

This is the first customer manifold from Kieran at Scanifab in Rotherham and he will be producing them going forward. He’s a great chap and very talented, so I’m very glad to support him and his business. 😊

Really enjoyed that latest vid. Glad things have started to come together.

Interesting that there was such a noticeable difference using powerflex black RTABs vs OEM + limiters. Were those Meyle bushes in ok condition when you took them off? If so, you’d think the limiters would just lock everything solid, laterally.

Found some new YouTube to follow. Thanks for sharing your exploits.

The Mountain at Caldwell isn't so scary in a car compared to two wheels. I can hear the crankshaft going light, how does it feel?

The last few months have been spent gently nudging the car towards hopefully becoming a more enjoyable track car (without ruining it!) and importantly, equipping it better for more track use and longer stints. I have been kind to it so far with modest track time and shorter sessions, though with the goal of a trackday at the ring next year, it needs to be capable of many reliable sessions through a day. It takes a lot of effort and money to get to a TD at the ring, not to mention it's a dream trip for me, so I want to be able to maximise both my time on track and enjoyment.

On the topic of the ring, we made another pilgrimage in May, just the one 7 tenths lap in the daily as it was TF and I don't like the liability risk (hence not taking the Z4 or MX5).

Before I jump into those updates, I fitted the BDS intake and did some performance testing at a local airfield. Unfortunately the usable section of the strip isn't long enough for high speeds where power increases would be most apparent, but even at modest speeds, there was a material and repeatable improvement in performance.

Note kmph rather than mph, no idea why I had it set to kmph...

With three runs performed with standard intake and BDS on the same day, with temps a touch higher with the BDS intake, there was a material improvement, with the biggest speed sweep providing the most valuable data, all recorded with a VBox Sport. I'm satisfied the improvement subjectively and objectively is aligned to both my hopes and BDS' claims.

It is a shame to lose the loud intake noise from the sound generator, but the cruising volume is much more tolerable and it sounds a bit 'harder' at full throttle now. I played around with retaining something of the sound generator pipework, but have now removed it all and blanked off the bulkhead hole.

From going to stopping, I am hopeful of continuing to use the standard calipers and discs, preferred very simply for cost, both in terms of capital expenditure and operating. The car isn't terribly powerful, nor terribly heavy, so hopefully I'm in with a fighting chance!...
EBC Bluestuff pads and Brembo HC discs were OK at the track last year, I had bought some EBC RP-1 pads for the front, but they were the wrong fitment, so had to go with the Blues. These were OK if not infinitely confidence inspiring, so have bought some EBC RP-X pads for track use on the front, and I have also added fresh fluid (Motul RBF660 this time), brass caliper bushes and some cooling at the front, utilising the factory fog light apertures. Weight is about net neutral for anyone interested.

I will likely add some cooling to the rear too, be it by way of some generic ducts or some GT3-style air guides, I'm favouring the former at the mo, perhaps mounted on the underside of the swing arm.

As I have been going through working on the car, I keep wire wheeling where necessary, treating any rust with Jenolite and painting, most of the front is done now and I have just treated the 1 year old driveshafts (should have painted them) along with some corrosion setting in at the bottom of the rear KW shocks, to be painted next weekend weather permitting. I had to resist temptation to waste time and materials on rear trailing arms and hubs as these will be replaced with properly reconditioned parts after the winter.

Talking of trailing arms, I now have the Powerflex Black RTA bushes in, along with some Powerflex Yellow gearbox bushes, both fitted by a mechanic friend. I haven't noticed much difference in drive or NVH from the RTA bushes, though hope to be able to feel an improvement at the track. The gearbox mounts on the other hand have improved the shift notably, although they have also introduced a little unpleasant, if not intolerable drivetrain noise. I think a stiffer rubber bush might be the right compromise here, lets see how the car feels at the track and if they bed in at all.

Next on the list was some oil cooling, I have used an //M2 oil filter housing (thanks Damien for the tip), which has the oil outlet and inlet and bunged the factory coolant hose that feeds the factory oil/water exchanger on the N52 filter housing. The oil cooler itself is a generic kit that I have mounted to take air from the kidney grilles, I will put some mesh on the back of the grilles to protect against stone chips; thought I had some in stock, but apparently not.

View attachment 186189

Whilst I had the grilles out, I painted the centre section matte black and polished the surrounds, you can also see the fog light ducts and how much I need a new license plate. I also need new BMW emblems in a few places on the car, however I'm afflicted with a desire to buy BMW Anniversary badges and am giving it a little time in case the affliction passes!

Continued in next post...

Hello, can you share more info on the M2 oil filter housing? I am thinking of running an external oil cooler and it seems to make it quite easier. Thanks!

What's the price of those? Are the cats built in? Should sound nice 👍
