My M54 had an oil change by @bigwinn (thanks Stu) in November 2023. From then up until August this year the car didn't move. It was started and warmed up a few times in that period but not many.
Since August it has done the princely mileage of 220. I checked the oil today and it is quite brown. It also smells very 'oily', almost 'petrolly'.

Does anyone know what could be the issue? Could it be rust in the oil from the engine sitting idle for a long time? Could it be the oil is deteriorating from just sitting?

I am happy to change the oil if it helps, but the oil in there is only 220 miles 'old'!

Probably had a lot of crap in it from previous poor oil /poor change regime..

Best to change it ..review after another 50 miles (2027?) and if similar change again..normally no need for filter change..

Modern API-SN oil with high detergent content would be good..

Just done similar on my car to try and get on top of historical oil change intervals..plus much much better to winter the car with fresh oil rather than the old crap rusting out the engine

Did we flush it out? I can’t remember
'WE' definitely didn't (I don't like oil it's messy) but I don't think you did, either.
The oil was OK in it when I got the car I think. I could check as the old oil is still sat in containers in my garage! 🫣

That made me laugh. Not far off the truth though. I hate getting my car dirty, or putting miles on it, or driving it anywhere!
I just like looking at it.....but I want clean oil inside aswell

I want it to be beautiful on the inside too! ;)

You can never ever change oil too frequently

Just a great pity so much damage done to engines in their first 3 years with those stupid oil change intervals…then later with folks who think BMW was being overly fussy specifying 18k between change
