Finally, first (and last?) trip report

Life gifted a rare opportunity to be solo and free for a week. I seized it. Five years in the making.

About 1,400 miles of a variety of terrains and sceneries. From the typical American 8-lane ‘interstate’, to mountain passes, steep inclines, coastal roads, twisty single-lane roads, dirty and slippery roads, tunnels, bridges, small towns, rain, sunshine, the raging Pacific, the magnificent Coastal Redwoods, elk, deer, coyotes, bigfoots, bald eagles, disgusting fast food, fun folk.

The N54 is a beast. Not once in manual or in Sport+. Just an occasional downshift for fun corner exit and smart overtakes. And most miles in good ole drive and cruise control. The +/- 5mph worked great to follow traffic. And the computers did wonders at keeping the speed steady, even in very steep downhill. One interesting moment, in one uphill tight righthander, the computer cut and re-applied power on its own. Cool.

On average, 400 miles per tank. According to Copilot, that’s 27.6 mpg (in 'Murican talk) or 8.5 litres per 100 km. Yes, it’s a big and powerful engine, but I was expecting a bit better on the road. Oh well.

The cabin is comfortable. But at my age, height and girth, 6-8 hours was all I could take. Definitely no Cadillac. The heated seat and steering wheel were very welcoming in the 40F mornings. For us in LHD land, the cupholder is worth its weight in gold. And haters will hate, the auxiliary left foot brake pedal is the best accessory money can buy.

One mandatory moment of shameless indulgence: Not only the E89 is rare, but in those parts is practically first-ever-seen. And this trim is bitchin'. It's a head-turner, a conversation-starter.

So that’s finally the first proper trip report. Perhaps also the last. I doubt I’ll have the opportunity and fortitude for another one. What a lovely motor.

Great write up..from the soul..

Did the route back in around 2006-2008 mid winter..

Remember we were the only car for quite a few miles..over a foot of snow …

Fortunately we were in some old school US 4x4..

Should do it more often..believe me..I’m an expert !

That sounds like a really great trip.

But as B21 says you really should do it more often. I've been doing at least 3 a year lately!

Thank you, peeps.

The Oregon coast, all the way to about Leggett in California is spectacular. Sadly I was so pressed to make to the overnight stop before sunset that I couldn’t afford stopping for pictures. (Headlamps are now so bloody bright that I avoid driving at night at all cost.)

And the drive through the Avenue of the Giants is unique. Obviously.

Definitely a route made for a proper GT like the Zed. Let’s hope another opportunity presents itself.

Doing PCH/101 north is on my cards for some point in the future, as having already done PCH south of San Francisco down to San Diego a few years ago, great trip and great roads. Obviously not in my Z, for technical reasons ;)

Had a driving holiday in 2017 and managed a good chunk of the Pacific highway from San Fran to San Diego (not in the Zed). Maybe I’ll have to plan another big trip to do a run like yours someday.

I would absolutelt love to do the PCH in my 'california' (it was named for the occasion after all). But the logistics, and cost, of getting it (and us) there would be preventative.
When I was a lot younger, I planned to do a US 'cost to coast' trip in a Winnebago but it never happened, mostly due to cost and also that I don't fly!

I’m not from California. (In fact, I’m a bonafide Eurotrash.) The only place I hear ‘PCH’ is in ‘SoCal’. From central California to ‘NorCal’, it’s colloquially referred to as ‘Highway 1’. Which ends at and mergers with US 101 in Leggett, California. Then it more or less skirts the Pacific to the Canadian border.

Definitely a must on any half decent bucket list. It’s epic. Irrespective of the ride.

We also have a coast-to-coast trip in the planning. Miami to Seattle, via the southern route (Texas etc). I'm retiring in a few years so it'll probably be done then.
Yeah not wanting to fly could be a bit of an issue, but doesn't stop you completely, there is an alternative (well two actually) ;) :driving:

Didn't realise it wasn't just the known name all over, as that was all I heard prior to planning it, yeah I knew it was Highway 1. We also did some of the 101 on our return north. Despite the wild fires and earthquakes, you live in a great place 👍

It's magical, Dave. Even our local weekend routes are massively fun. I only know one bloke --an Aussie on the US BMW forum-- who had bad things to say about San Francisco and surroundings. It's not without problems. Obviously. But the upside beats the downside 1,000 to 1. And if you have time and means to drive 1-2 nights away, you have to pinch yourself to check if you're dreaming. I sure will miss it when I return to Europe for retirement in a few years.
