Climate control? Too hot, then too cold

The climate control on my car is definitely not working properly.

I've owned the car for about a year. Most of the time I have had the temp control one stop from minimum and it's been ok. Sometimes when cold I have to move it to 24+

Today I tried heat max to check the servo on the air mixer were working - they are. I can alternate between very hot and max chill.
Alas it's now sulking.

Now I need the temp one click below MAX or it's freezing in the car. It reminds me of my day in the MG midget. I used to put a hot water bottle on my lap in the winter for long journey. The wind through the rust hole in the floor made it so cold.

I assume I need to try a new controller thingy?

one of these? Or is there something else I should try first?

There's a little fan in there to draw in ambient air - it might not be working or be clogged with 20 years of dust.

In 4 years of ownership I've never been able to work out how the heater controls work.
