Talk to me about carbon intakes for the S54

So I have decided to go down the route of a carbon intake for the Z4MR.
I’m in for the noise and some extra ponies, because of this I’m discounting the new Karbonius noise only jobbie.
The options are Karbonius, Jeff steel and Haimus as far as I’m aware.
I’m torn between the Karbonius (I would say the most attractive) or the Haimus (claims the most power and torque gains).

Happy to hear from anyone with experience, maybe figures to back it up, general input on the subject.

Help me make the most educated decision.

I wouldn't concern yourself too much with power / torque tbh. They'll all be much of a muchness and I doubt in the real world you'll notice any discernible difference. Will be more down to your tune / tuner in any case.

Bear in mind most of those airboxes are designed for the M3 as well and won't fit straight in to our cars without some modification. The only one that is a straight fit that I'm aware of is the Karbonius which comes with a Z4M specific design now. What I would go for if it was available when I brought.
Not sure what the 'noise only' one is your refer to.

Eventuri have developed a csl “style” airbox. They are just in tooling atm as they have had to redesign the airfilter housing and will be for sale shortly. No need for mapping or other parts either

Just put a set of S54 velocity stacks on instead...

Alternatively...

Karb race fits with a minor trim and sits neatly over the Z4M air intake.

You can also fit the OEM filter was a big plus for me

I mostly agree with what others above have said. Biggest factor comes down to having a reputable tuner. I went with Turner Motorsport because it was the best value (see review here), but I would’ve gone with Karbonius if price was not a factor.

I had a look on the website and 3 things put me off.
They claim no power gains, the website says it does need a map and the Eventuri filter setup (which I have already) doesn’t fit onto it.
Basically makes in nigh on the same ball park figures (when I have sold on my Eventuri filter). For that I would much rather have the full fat one.

Anyone know for certain what is the difference between the race and CSL Karbonius intakes?
In short, one has the OEM style csl bell mouth intake and the race extends much further down towards the cold air feed on the car.

In more detail, the csl one has the intake hole below for the csl specific cold air bumper feed that the zed doesn't have, so you'd either have to block it up or try or just leave it sucking warm air in from down the side of the engine. It also doesn't extend closely to the OEM zed air intake so in my opinion it will be taking much warmer air than the race which sits right over the OEM air feed.

I went race due to the above, even though it doesn't look as pretty, I can't see it when I'm driving and I want max performance, no heat soak etc. I also fitted the karb thermal blanket too to help keep it cool.

Can confirm zero heat soak issues, did datalog for a bit and saw 1 Deg over ambient, even when not going hugely quick, just local B roads.

Also, I think the race is cheaper?

Thanks. Just what I wanted to hear.

I see you are in the Cotswolds, I’m only in Oxford.

I've got a GSR Airbox, and Martyn at Ecuworx is mapping the car for me.

Echo the above, I had an Evolve tune with my eventuri, wasn't overly impressed really!

If you're wanting to see how the GSR airbox needs trimming to fit the Z4M (and generally a chunk more info about mapping etc.) then well worth a read of Martyn's old Z4M Build Thread: https://z4-forum.com/threads/martyns-z4m-coupe.138219/

Speak to RDM Shop, they supplied my haimus racing box and all the fitting kit. went on perfect with no issues. oil dipstick is the only thing that needs modifying/ changing. i have also produced a Z4M specific snorkel that sit over the factory air inlet unlike any other manufacturers.

check out my post.
