It's marvellous how we've progressed, when I was a wee lass, it was 45's and albums and much of the music was ruined by the hiss of scratches. Then we got magnetic tape, tape recorders (did anyone not tape the songs on the top 40 on a Sunday night) and then the breakthrough.
In 1988 I was fortunate to have an older, richer sister who decided to upgrade her Philips CD104 for an ARCAM, oh the joy of hissless music and then out came the MiniDisc and oh wow, truly portable music without the hiss and the start of creating playlists from my collection of CD's. It was a perfect time until the advent of the iPod and of course, everything changed again completely with the introduction of iTunes. Since the MiniDisc, 95% of my music is listened to through playlists, but it was the MiniDisc that really started it by making it relatively easy to make them. And yes I had them in a few of my cars too
