M market watch

I spotted this one recently and thought it looked sensibly priced, although it is a bit flimper spec with no Sat Nav, cruise or PDC. But I haven't done any MOT history or other digging.

That is very cheap. Only 5 years history on the current registration. One fail then 4 clean passes over 12,000 miles. I suspect the current owner purchased it “less than well looked after” and has since treated it with due care and attention.

It looks like the car was brought over from Northern Ireland hence the plate and lack of MOT history.

The car was up for sale April 2024 for £18,970 and a new logbook issued June 2024.

Is that about the right price for a 38k MC then Mr Tidy? Genuine question as I've just started looking for one and prices seem to be all over the place.

Well it doesn't seem silly. If you look at the other ones on Autotrader there is another blue one with 44Kmiles advertised privately for a grand more and Birds are looking for £22K for a red one with 75K miles.

There are quite a few cheaper ones, but they all have higher mileages like a black one with 71K miles for £16K - it just depends what you want or are willing to spend really!

Thanks. Would you need to factor in bearing shells and the usual preventative stuff for a 38k car? Genuine question as I don't know and am fresh to looking for an M coming from an E89 3.0i? I'm on the London/Surrey border, btw, so possibly not that far from you. Cheers.

Even a 38k car will be 20 years old+ by now - so yes - you need to factor in everything.

It's not just the miles - its the time.

I'm considering one also - hunting the absolute best I can find, with lowest milage I can find without satnav, expecting to pay £25k sometime over this winter. Hoping to find a dark colour coupe on sub 20k miles with a nice service history.

I don’t believe you need to factor in everything. It’s all to do with how the car has been treated and kept. I have 2008 31000 mile ZMC. I bought it three years ago for mid £20ks. It was great but I still spent £2000 on it but not shells, not mounts, not vanos. Simply because they are all fine. The oil has been tested now and all times no unwanted minerals in the oil. The money was actually spent on a new caliper, new rear spring (one had been replaced only when it cracked a few years only), and drop links, and everything checked. The other money was on those little pieces to make it perfect. All things like hoses and pipes are all good. I had them checked as I didn’t want the car to break down in Spain on a back road at 35degrees plus in the shade. It can be a killer. Really. The car did 2500 miles without missing a beat. So for the OP look for a car that has clearly been cherished and serviced properly. And things replaced when necessary - for instance mine already has had all 4 drop links replaced and the rear springs and dampers. But the bushes are all still fine. I am not selling mine anytime soon but if I did it would be around £23k. It’s a concours condition car inside and underneath. Sone cars on here are even better having been subject to full underneath rebuilds. But are usually much higher mileage. These are also great buys.

By factor in everything, I think your post makes my point perfectly.

It's all getting old. Every moving part has moved (a lot). Every bit of rubber has aged (even if it didn;t move). Every plastic part has aged & degraded over time.

So even if the major mechanicals have been kept on top of, owning an older vehicle will always be a merry go round of maintenance if you want to keep it sweet.

I've done it many times - it's all the fun of a bargain high performance car (love it).

That's very interesting, thanks both. As much as I can admire a concours car it would be wasted on me 😂. I would want one that is very presentable and mechanically sorted though. Swings and roundabouts with miles versus maintenance, I guess.

I've seen bearing shells out of a 50K mile car showing copper, but know owners who have gone past 100K before getting them replaced. My car had 7 previous keepers so I got them replaced at 78K and the upper shells were all showing wear, but not much copper. Not knowing how the car had been treated I got them done for peace of mind. The engine mounts were in a far worse state so I was glad they were also replaced!

If you aren't looking for a concourse car it's probably worth looking for one that has had some of the big jobs done, like this one that sold recently on 58K miles with the shells already replaced and a suspension refresh. https://z4-forum.com/threads/z4m-coupe-for-sale-price-update-19995.152557/

Otherwise you need to budget for doing those things.

I'm in Windlesham. You'd be welcome to poke around my car as I'm around most of the time. If that would be helpful DM me.

This one on Car & Classic has been up for a while and had a recent price reduction from £25,000. Think it looks a bit high and not convinced by the MOT history. Thoughts appreciated.

Hi, new member here who's after a z4m coupe ,
Originally was after a 3.0si but upon viewing a few local to me I could not find any decent ones ( I'm down south) majority seem up north, also the rising prices of the low mileage "looked after ones" have made me think its worth purchasing a z4mc also hydraulic steering appeals to me , I understand owning costs are far higher than a 3.0si but I think the s54 engine outweighs the cons !
I own a 550 marranello so not to fussed about maintenance costs as im used to high service costs , I'm just after something I can enjoy for spirited road driving and always wanted a coupe since I was young

I've been lurking in the deaths of the forum looking up all the usual Issues with the cars etc .

Just wondered if any of you experts could cast your eyes over this I have found localish to me ,
It's not exact spec I'm after but thought I would have a look and drive it to see if it is exactly what I want , also rod bearings have been done which is appealing.

any advice would be greatly appreciated or even if any of you are looking at selling your z4mc's

Many thanks

Been looking one aswell for last few weeks, some look like they have been on sale for over a year according to price tracker on Autotrader. Most overpriced!
