I have an E89 2009 Z4, I fitted the cruise stalk via a new steering column but I just need to enable it, what can I use to do this?

I also want to disable the DVD player safety feature which stops it playing when the car moves, what can I use for this too?

Welcome to the forum George, if you have a laptop you can use NCSExpert
Can you recommend a particular OBD device to use for it, and how do you avoid mistakes as I’ve read this is in German, is that correct?

How well does google translate translate if I use the camera tool with it?

I’ve had my lead and software over 5 years now, I bought it as a bundle (ISTA, IMPA, etc) from an eBay seller, I don’t think he is on there now, the software is available free online if you can find it, I think one of them is “Mikes easy BMW tools”or something like that.
I’d also recommend NCS Dummy, which has a lot of the options translated.
Here’s a link to a tutorial for Dummy’s
Basically with NCSEpert you read the cars VO, (how it was specked when bought) then read a particular ECU, save the file, alter the option you want and then write it back to the ECU.
Google is pretty good at translating but unfortunately the description for the options isn’t full German so doesn’t always make sense, you are better off typing the phrase into google and seeing what comes up, probably won’t be for an E89 but it will give you a good idea of what it is.

If you look on YouTube there’s a good tutorial for retrofitting cruise control, and coding.

Thank you for the thorough response I think I’ll give NCSDummy a try first, and that video you linked I have seen and does seem good but just a very long process lol

It is quite involved from installation to using, but take your time follow any tutorials and do plenty of research, but at the end of the day you will have all the tools to program and diagnose anything.

NCS Dummy wont do it.
That video is a long process for a reason, and the reason is because that's how you do the coding. There are no short cuts to coding, if you want to do things the quick and short cut way then coding isn't for you, you WILL end up buggering the cars coding up then you're in one he'll of a big problem.
I can't stress this enough, I've had so many conversations with owners that are either impatient or don't listen, if its not done the right way then it's not going to work, simple!

BTW, that's my video, it was made for those owners, like you, that want to do it themselves, but I've done well over 600 cruise control retrofits now for owners from all over, Scotland, Wales, South East, South West, Belgium and France. I only do it one way, and that's the way in the video.
As for the software, all original places to download it from were removed due to copyright issues, but there are some "official" places. Some people do still have it available though ;) or I do offer a coding service for this still, just send me a PM/DM and we can talk.

Dave (AnubisZed) recently fitted a cruise control to my Orange Z4. What a incredibly helpful chap he is, he also fixed a couple of other things on the car at the same time. I can't recommend him highly enough.

When I have the spare cash I'm going back for the fitting of the Apple car play system.

Not a z4 but a 125i convertible without cruise he's not done one before but agreed to see how coding went. Fitting a doddle for him unfortunately the coding didn't work BUT Dave removed cruise squib and recoded car back to standard. Disappointed it hadn't worked but on checking cruise squib I had bought from ebay found it was the wrong part even though advertised for my car. I should have checked part no on realoem - have now sourced correct part no - so many are incorrectly listed on ebay. (often do say if for manual or auto wipers) The breath of his customer base speaks volumes from many happy Z4 owners.
