BMW Z4 EPS Steering Problem – Others Having This Too?

Hi everyone,

I know quite a few of you have had EPS (Electric Power Steering) problems on your Z4s, and I think I’m dealing with the same thing on my 2011 BMW Z4 sDrive23i (E89) — so I thought I’d start a thread to compare notes and hopefully get some advice.

Here’s what’s happening with mine:

Steering has become stiff and heavy, especially at low speeds.

I’ve had two AGM batteries go flat in the last few months (both were correctly registered).

Alternator’s been checked and is fine.
When scanned, these EPS fault codes come up:

D516 – Message error terminal status, receiver EPS

D507 – Power Steering Control Module fault

63EC – Electric Power Steering system
communication error

From what I can tell, the EPS rack/module could be the culprit, and it might not be going to “sleep” properly — which could explain the battery drain.

The big issue with a rebuild seems to be finding someone willing to remove the old EPS rack so it can be sent off. Most rebuild companies need the unit sent to them, but I’ve struggled to find a garage willing to just do the remove/refit.

I’ve only ever done basic jobs myself (brake discs and pads are the biggest I’ve tackled), so pulling the rack out on my driveway isn’t realistic.

For those who’ve had this issue before:

Did you go for a rebuild or a full replacement EPS rack?

And does anyone know of a specialist in South Yorkshire who’ll remove and refit the rack for a rebuild?

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who’s been through this and what worked for you.

Thanks,
Paul

Go for a refurb..ECU testing at £500 vs £2,500 ..get an indy to remove it, store the car, send the rack off and then refit..

EPS Steering Issue – Now Fixed

Quick update on my steering problem.

Fix:

Refurbished complete steering rack and EPS motor (£269, 12-month warranty, plug-and-play).

Fitted by the garage that services my car — £279 labour. Wheel alignment booked next.

Result:

Steering now feels spot on, no fault codes, and the car drives properly again. I’ve kept the old rack and EPS motor to refurb later as a spare.

Who did the refurb rack?
