FOR SALE E85 3.0 SMG - SORN - £1k

Sadly the time has come to part ways with my Z4. I’ve owned this car since 2014 and it’s gone from pride & joy to weekend toy, to unused and ultimately SORN.

I would really like this car to go to a forum member and enthusiast who can give it some TLC and get some use and enjoyment out of it.

Car is in Ely, Cambridgeshire.

Details:

• 2003 E85
• 3.0i.
• SMG
• 82k miles

Good Bits:

• Runs and drives. Starts and Stops.
• All electrics work, including the roof (roof motor relocated to the boot).
• Decent bodywork, interior and alloys. Overall cosmetic condition is good for a car its age.
• Low mileage of 82k miles.

Bad Bits:

• SORN for over a year and needs a good service to get it back on the road.
• All tyres will need replacing, based on age and flatspots where it’s been sat.
• Airbag light keeps coming on, fault related to B-Pillar Sensor.
• Intermittent battery drain issue.
• Lacquer peel on rear bumper

Mods:

• Air filter
• Exhaust from Mike (Ducklakeview)
• RX8 seats
• Repainted interior trims and seat backs.
• Roof motor relocated to the boot.
• Cruise Control Retrofitted
• Full sound system including 3-way components in the doors, 6x9’s behind the seats and a 4-channel amp. DAB aerial.

Hello. I joined the forum recently on the lookout for a Z4 as a weekend toy (mid-life crisis I'm told)
So I'm not what you would deem a true forum member yet I guess. I do have previous experience of BMWs of this era though.
Being about 50 miles from you, my question is; if I were to book this for an MOT do you think it would be ok to drive it from yours to the test?
It's something I would book anyway, so I knew what I had on my plate to sort out.

Airbag light & tyres will be auto fails for an MOT, might be better to either go into it as a project car (with plenty of digging), or get an inspection done as opposed to an MOT.

AA or local garages will handle that for maybe £100.

It's a cheap price (for now) though - might be worth saving if you can control the costs & do much of the work yourself.

Just with what's declared you might be looking at £1k to spend, so still cheap if no other big issues are revealed.

I wouldn't recommend it in this case. The car needs new tyres which would be my concern driving it any distance.

Agree 100% with Matsmith, this car needs a bit of work pre-MOT. My own man-maths were roughly £500 for 4x new tyres, £500-£750 on a really good mechanical service and deal with some previous advisories. IMO it's not worth trying to get these 20+ year old cars totally pristine for a weekend toy.

Assuming the airbag fault can either be cheaply de-coded / bypassed / sensor replaced (I've never done enough research for a permanent solution) then the car would back up and running for a little over £2k - depending on the buyers own level of DIY skills.

Sadly I simply have lost the 'bug' for it all

Thank you. I already plan to do the work myself in time for next spring. The beauty of booking a mot is being able to drive it to within a mile of my house. I just wanted to know your opinion of whether it would drive there ok?
It seems not. So I would need to find transport as well.

If the seller didn't mind, you could always get a mobile tyre fitter to fit the tyres at the current address, so it would be safe to drive. Unless you'd be fitting new tyres yourself, you'd not be any worse off, and would save on transport.

Just something to consider!
