Mysterious Metal Clanging Noise :-(
Hi guys,
Need some advice and help please! I have a 2004 2.5 Z4 with a weird issue.
7 times out of 10 when I change gears I hear a loud, sharp metal clanging noise. It has been like this for a good 6 months now and I'm just so curious as to what it might be. It seems to be happening more frequently now.
Also, sometimes when I depress / release the accelerator the clanging noise can also be herd.
This only happens when I'm driving in or changing into 1st or 2nd, very rarely when I'm in 3rd or above - although it's quite possible I can't hear it when I'm in 3rd as the car is travelling faster and generating more general noise.
Managed to get a few videos for you, you might need to increase the volume to hear the clanging:
Any one out there with a similar issue?

Hmmm.. Yes the noise can be herd when I put it in reverse, however it can also be herd when I change into 1st/2nd, or as mentioned, when I depress / release the accelerator too..daveparkinson wrote:i think i know your problem the noise come when in reverse if yes its the grease where the prop meets the dif its gone to dust you need to replace the grease not an easy job had mine done in a garage £120

Anyone got any specific information about exactly which components need lubricating? I've not yet come across a definitive guide and really want to know what I'm asking the garage about!

Re: Mysterious Metal Clanging Noise :-(
I can hear two types of the noise . Loud, low pitch clang and couple high pitched ones. Especially video 4. I'm very interested what are the high pitched ones, as mine does exactly the same when gently acclerating or deaccelerating on low gears.

Z4M Coupe Ruby Black. 220M alloys. sepang bronze nappa. carbon dash. cruise control. nav. pdc. dsp pro hifi. fold-in mirrors. rain sensor. auto-dipping mirror. electric memory heated seats. stubby +other stuff.

Also, does anyone know whether we should be getting a shuffle on to get the noise fixed? i.e. is anything being damaged or worn out as a result?
Cheers

Re: Mysterious Metal Clanging Noise :-(
After much searching on the forum, I think our problem might be worn clutch springs.
Can anyone confirm from experience?

Re: Mysterious Metal Clanging Noise :-(
Mine does the same. I had it on the ramp and while one mechanic was moving the car forward and backwards with the hand break on the noise can clearly be heard coming from the centre of the diff. I have heard Bout the grease fix but would like more info on exactly what do do and what sort of grease to use.

Got the same noise when starting off...thought it might be a U joint needing replaced. Doesn't happen every time.
