Biker with camera, have I been 'lured' ?

Post by Meds » Fri Jun 20, 2025 1:25 pm

A peculiar incident today..

Driving the Coupe today, I used a local road I know very well and caught up with a motorcyclist, he was riding very slow for the conditions, I'm never one to trailgate or hustle so I hold back and enjoy the weather.. I notice he has a helmet camera.

After 30 seconds we get to a small village, 30mph restriction.
Again, I'm holding way back with no intention to hustle him.
We cruise through at low twenties, then he waves me past, I thought this was odd as I wasnt giving him any reason to think I was pushing him on or looking like I wanted to pass him, as we were both progressing through the village at a fine speed, I decided not to pass.

He again waves me to pass a 2nd time.
OK I thought, maybe he's got mechanical issues and wants to pull over and felt he needed some space..

I pass, carefully, I notice the blinky speed indication camera flash 27 and 28mph as I was passing. At this point he seemed to keep (or maybe even increase, although cannot prove this) his speed so it took what felt like an age to clear him.
I pull in, giving room, never exceeding the speed restriction or any behaviour for him to feel anything untoward or unpredicatable in my driving.

Then, he pretty much (what it felt like from the mirror) tailgates me though the entire village, matching my (just under 30mph) speed.

Eventually he turns off and we go our separate ways.

I cant help thinking this was quite odd. Why wave someone to pass, then a 2nd time, then to only sit directly behind them.

I also cant help to think I'll be on some 'Drivers Exposed' or motorcylist Facebook page soon, with the footage implying I was hustling him, and then overtook, unsafely though a village.
What the video will not show is him waving me to pass and the previous few minutes of me following him with no intent or any inconsiderate driving. etc etc.

Odd, yes.
Am I over paranoid, maybe. ?

Never know these days, lots of weirdos about
Now, Sterling grey Z4 2.2 with cup holders, stubby aerial and sport seats. Roadsters ‘cause they’re great with the roof down.
Ford Anglia, Red Sprite, a few MG midgets, MGB Roadster and yellow Ford Capri, all gone many years now.

He probably thought it was a strange way to be driving a BMW. I bet you even indicated to pass.

I think lots of bikers have helmet cams these days. As you say you did nothing wrong, so what have you got to worry about.

He probably thought you were going to want to go faster than he was, and he knew he was turning off soon anyways. Little odd but nothing to worry about imo.

I didn't get the impression he was a fellow petrolhead, at all.
Very slow and overly cautious, then the camera. It all felt very odd.
Not saying all car enthusiasts drive fast and dont use dashcams.

We can't deny there's a minority of road users who actively head out to film confrontation on our roads.

Not saying all car enthusiasts drive fast and dont use dashcams.

It honestly felt I'd been lured in and then filmed.
I may be (probably) over-thinking this, though.

Let's see if I appear on some dangerous driving vigilante video somewhere. 🤣

Isn’t there a new rule in the Highway Code that you have to given cyclists / motorcyclists a metre and a half of room when overtaking and more if you are exceeding 30?
I read somewhere that the amount of helmet can footage being sent to the police has increased massively recently. My local force even has a dedicated email for them to drop said footage into.

Yup, which is why the self-centred, entitled, non-road tax paying tossers veer to the right as you pass them, then get all righteous about how you didn't give them room.

Would have overtaken and been on my way. Any shenanigans might suggest the person has accomplices and potential car jack, especially in a rural area.

I've got front and rear cameras on my bike. As said, you're being a bit paranoid.
