if its the sound i think it is, the intermittent nature suggests to me is something aux belt related - perhaps a small fray in a belt?

My thought as well but it disturbs me as it sounds like it's coming from the back of the engine (or rear half of it).

Yeah it does sound like a frayed belt. I was also thinking it could be the flywheel slowly dying.
When the flywheel on my M57 330d was on the way out it started making horrible noises even without engaging or disengaging the clutch.
