front roundel removal help

Post by RidgewaY » Tue Jan 08, 2008 2:38 am

Attempting to replace the front roundel.

Popped the grill off, and there are 2 nutsholding 2 of the 3 posts pretty solid.

So, how (if @ all) are the nuts supposed to be removed? They didn't want to seem to budge w/a ratchet...do I just take a wrench & keep on turning? Or are the posts supposed just to slide past?

I noticed that on the new roundel the posts are not threaded for a nut.
The posts in the old/current roundel also don't seem to have original threads, but I can see that it's scraped away liek the nuts were screwed on...

I'm @ an impass...quite frustrating for what should be a simple fix.

If they aren't coming off then sadly the screw is stripped.

As for the new roundels it sounds like you got a z3 roundel. Haven't ever purchased a roundel for my z4 but when I did for my z3, it came just as you said, unthreaded. The original one on my car was unthreaded as well though. It had a piece of rubber holding each pin which was actually attached to the car.

Try a nut breaker. That will crack the nut and leave the bolt intact.

This is what I meant, a nut splitter.

They look the same as mine - self tapping nuts stamped out of thin sheet metal. They are supposed to cut threads in the plastic posts holding the roundel on and normally unscrew easily. I suspect they have previously been overtightened to the point that they have cut a groove rather than thread and so now just revolve.

I suggest dremmel of saw them off ( they are only wafer this metal) and buy a new set from BMW for about 10p if they did not come with the new roundel.

If you cut the posts close to the nut; then they should pop off.
