Hi!

Morning Everyone,

I’d like to say I’m the proud owner of a beautiful Z4 E89, but in truth it’s my wife’s daily. However, being chief purchase of cars, washer bottle filler, tyre pressure checker and valet, I’ll claim some ownership!

A diehard Germen car fan – I’ve gone through my share of VAG’s, a few Passat wagons (great load luggers), GTIs culminating in a Deep Pearl Blue 05 R32 with Recaro wingbacks and only 54k. Tried a Merc, shocking electrics, too my current (and expected long term) Audi Allroad Bi-TDI, with Stage 1 remap – comfort, surprisingly quick and still returns mid-40’s on the motorway. And in between all this my only every other BM, a 330d – Stage 1, DPF and swirl flap delete and Beyern Mesh staggered alloys, a fun car!

With the youngest now driving it was time to get rid of my wife’s Kid’sKab and look for something we could enjoy on weekends away and some longer touring holidays. So, we dipped our toe into the convertible scene last year with arguably the best small sports car of the last 35 years, a grey MX-5 2.0 Sport, we loved it, but it was not a car for long journeys!

Needing something with a few more creature comforts (comfort being one!) it came down to the Boxster or the Z4. The Z won, and we are over the moon with it. Narrowing down spec (I like cubic capacity and HP!), finding out that the engines were 2.0 four pots apart from the 30 & 35i was a surprise, thinking all BM’s must be 6 cylinders, so I was pleasantly surprised when I drove a friends 20i. We were not worried about sat-nav as the age we were looking for it would be little out of date, and there was only ever one colour combo for us white with coral red. So, for the last 4 weeks we have been enjoying our new white, coral red interior 28i M-Sport with 19’ 326M alloys.

A great trip from Kent to Sheringham on the north Norfolk coast last weekend was its first big outing and we’re sold – enough performance, a good soundtrack, comfortable and most of all good looking from every angle, top up or down.

A few intermittent problems with the roof, the worst, getting to Sheringham and not being able to open the boot to get our overnight bag out the first night, opened the following morning first time!?!?!. I’ve changed the Salmon relays, clean all the rubber seals and lubricated all moving joints, but still a little temperamental, so next Saturday off to Cayman Auto’s in Redhill to have the roof looked at.

Over the next few months a few upgrades/mods planned – wheel refurb, a front splitter (front bumper just missing a little something for an M-Sport IMO), possible small colour-coded boot spoiler and most importantly, and would love some thoughts/feedback a satnav. From my research I have narrowed it down to either the Ugode or Taffio unit, does anyone have experience with these or recommend anything else? Will also look to add some additional speakers at the same time as it only has the professional head unit, so want some more speakers behind the seats and in the door pillars, is this any easy upgrade?

Congratulations from another 28i owner with the same colour combo!

I understand that Cayman Autos are the premier convertible roof specialists in the region so hopefully they can sort your issues out and without it getting too pricey. There is obviously a wealth of knowledge about roof issues on this board on the 'E89 Problems' forum so may also be worth having a good peruse of that. Not having any specific issues in that area myself yet - touch wood (!), can't say that I've digested much of it, though I do at least take comfort that it's there.

Unlike you, I specifically sought out a car with both factory satnav and upgraded speakers (viewing them as a better starting point for any future upgrade), but again, you can fill your boots with info on what others have done and hopefully someone will be along to answer your specific questions.
