E89 Prices

Post by CliveN » Fri Jan 24, 2025 3:53 pm

I have been an E89 owner since 2017. I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised (but I am!), but I found the recent (though steady) decline in E89 prices to be quite shocking. I always thought that 23i prices would be relatively low but was genuinely alarmed to read you could buy a reasonably okay 2.0i (in my eyes “new”) for bugger all. And that relatively nice well cared for examples of anything are struggling to sell. I thought this (banger status) was E85 territory. But of course we are now in 2025 and the last E89s were produced 9 years ago. And some have six figure mileages. So they are now judged in the eyes of everyone as potentially ruinous and basically a “shed”. And an impractical one at that. I did think I would sell mine at some point but have reconsidered as the car remains a great looker and is very nice to be in. But it’s still a shock.

E89 Prices

The decline in used car prices is across the board. I put it down to a 're-adjustment' after the absolute mentalness that Covid caused.
New cars aren't selling either. I just leased a £50k new Audi for peanuts and got £11,500 off the list price of a new Focus (over 25% off).
I get silly low prices offered on a daily basis from lease brokers now. I got nothing for nearly 3 years!
All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.

As Pondrew says car prices got out of control with covid.

There is a lot of people that have paid far too much for their cars and can't afford, or don't want to accept, the losses due to price correction.

There is many E89s that look good value now. Some of the higher priced ones are still on the market. One of the higher priced 30i has been on AutoTrader since June 2023!

The prices of some of the E85s confuses me. There used to be a large gap between the E85 and the E86. The price gap has closed.

This one came and went in a matter of days but it was a '65' plate well specced car with 60k miles and was priced just under the Cap & Black Book retail price estimate of £10,500 - for a private sale they had it valued at £7,800 & £8,200 respectively.

The 35is are standing up relatively well. Late nice ones can push £22.5 which i think is ok.

I would be extremely surprised if any are actually selling for those type of figures, though. Those are 2022 figures. You can ask what you like, there is no law against it.

There is a nice looking 2.5 litre E85 with decent mileage (90k ish IIRC) for sale on another forum. It's up for a mere £2,750 and has been for sale for months (and months). To me, that shows the lack of a market.

The late nice low mileage ones they offer £11,500.

A quick check and the cars advertised at £21-23k come back around £16.5k at dealer price and £15.2k private sale.

The 7 cars for sale on AutoTrader have all been on sale for months. 4 months old is the most recent advert.

Which is exactly the reason I am holding off advertising mine on AT (or anywhere else). I honestly don't think I will sell mine anytime soon, unless it's a steal.

Why did you not expect a slow but steady decline in prices?

Kuh! Convertibles not selling in winter. Difficult to believe.

Even worse for me, I'm trying to buy a 35iS and can't find one!*

You do realise than a minimum of 4 months ago takes you back to the start of Autumn? Other adverts were posted in the Summer.
