E85 clearance between wheel/tyre and strut?

Post by Pagan » Sat Oct 12, 2024 10:00 pm

Hi all, I'm planning on getting some new wheels for my Z4 E85, and I've read lots about sizes. I'm thinking for the fronts, 19x8.5 with 235/35 tyres, and it seems ET 40 would be sensible in order to avoid wheel arch rub. However, I can't find information about how much clearance there is for Z4s on the inside of the wheel. According to wheel-size.com , the above wheel/tyre would be 12mm closer to the strut than stock. Does this sound okay?

I just wanted to be sure, since wheels are a pretty big investment. Anybody see any other issues with the above numbers before I make the purchase? Thanks.

E85 clearance between wheel/tyre and strut?

That's strange as I just did a comparison on willtheyfit.com between your proposed set up and standard 107, 108 and MV2 wheels and tyres and it says they'd sit 0.7mm further away from the strut: https://www.willtheyfit.com/index.php?w ... offset2=40

Which seems more likely because although the rim is 12.5mm wider the 40 offset puts it 7 mm further out, and part of the extra width will be on the outside anyway.
Coupes because stunning!

E85 clearance between wheel/tyre and strut?

That's probably a good sign then, thanks.

I checked on willtheyfit too, and it's saying 12mm closer to the strut compared to my stock 225/55 R16 7" wide ET47 setup.

I've also put my hand behind the wheel, and the clearance between the tyre and strut is about a finger thickness, so maybe 15mm.

In case anyone else wonders about the clearance, I also found this calculator that's been very useful: https://www.fitmentindustries.com/tire- ... alculators

After measuring with the wheel off and using the above calculator, it appears my new rim would have about 4mm clearance (conservatively) from the strut, which seems okay from what I've read.

Thanks Doddsy and Tidy.
