Roof opens with Key fob but not with inside switch
Hi
My roof opens with the key fob but doesn't open with the inside switch
When using inside switch, it the back glass goes up then it does move further.. Then it struggles to close aswel ( Key fob does not have the closing feature)
Any solution to this?

Sounds like broken wire in roof.
As usual code reader will give some idea where.

But it works ok on the key fob?
Very odd symptoms.
Is the engine running when you do it from inside the car?

Could be a bad switch or loose harness connector to the switch. Here is how you get to it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-7-l_adTlk&t=473s
You might want to use a diagnostic tool to determine if the switch is intermittent, before ripping everything apart.

I am experiencing the same thing but based on my cars history I am just going to replace the module now and add one more to a long list of module replacements! I had a battery catastrophically fail in the car, shortly after I started experiencing subtle and infrequent malfunctions which steadily grew in intensity and frequency over time. I already tried replacing the switch with a brand new one along with re-coding the module but neither provided a solution. The only thing that's weird is that the module does not report any errors when scanned!

The CTM module is a ‘simple’ ECU’ so it’s diagnostics are limited..dumaurier7 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 12, 2024 11:57 am I am experiencing the same thing but based on my cars history I am just going to replace the module now and add one more to a long list of module replacements! Good luck..
We choose to go to on with this endeavour at this time and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard…

If I'm correct, that switch goes directly to the CTM module. Can you back pin that input and check with a multimeter to see if the CTM input is receiving the signal?

I'm shortly to play in this area anyone know what type of signal goes back to ctm. Wiring diagram quite basic. Could be voltage change or is it some bus signal.

I believe it's just a voltage change. I recall Robbi posted a schematic not too long ago. I have a copy, but the top portion is cut off. Obviously the portion you need...

I replaced the entire switch with a brand new one and it does the same thing, in fact lately the inside switch works intermittently now but the close switch remains functional. Inconsistent operation like this does not indicate a continuity problem (to me) but a module problem, all the modules I've had to change started off the same way until they failed completely.

Could be a broken wire in the harness where it exits the door. The wires are flexing every time you open or close the door. BMW doesn't use the most flexible wires, as people with convertible top problems can attest. I once had a VW that had so many splices I had to replace the harness. Sometimes windows wouldn't work other times the alarm would go off in the middle of the night.

Sorry for answering so late:
Those two buttons simply put ground to the input ports of the CTM, they are wired directly.
Btw, E89 CTM's can be simply cross-changed without any coding. The only thing to care about is:
CTM's of E89 with a 4th solenoid on the hydraulic pump (software as of 6.30.00 & higher, introduced ~summer 2012) will fail on hydraulic pumps without this 4th one. The solenoid wiring get's checked on initialization.
Elder CTM's (up to sw 6.00.00) operate fine on every E89 from 2009..2016.

Thanks.
I took the switch apart and attached wires to circuit board and reinstalled.
Project was to use a remote control to open and close roof.
Then realised i needed to power module when car unlocked, easy i think, but needed ignition key in..
As we know we can open roof but not close with basic key fob.
Also does car need to detect someone in seat to operate close function.
That little project was abandoned.
