Transmission fluid change
I changed the transmission fluid today with some Redline D4 ATF.
I also noticed that the Z4 has the same oil seepage "problem" from the drain plug as the Z3... As a matter of fact they have the same Getrag S5D-250G transmisson. Using Teflon tape it is not recommanded as some had experienced cracks in the tranny case because of the pressure it puts on the case.
So I decided to put some Hight Temp RTV on the thread and see if it makes any difference.

Re: Transmission fluid change
Did the gear change improve after changing the fluid, I'm interested in changing mine if the shift slickness can be improved.

It's smoother in engaging, particularly 1st gear when you start from still.

Re: Transmission fluid change
Sounds good Would the same fluid be the correct one for my 3.0 M54?

Re: Transmission fluid change
That's a different transmission (should be a GS6-37BZ), so I don't know for sure. If you're interested in Radline, I would contact them here and asked them what they would recommand. Ask also the filling capacity as it might be diffrent. They got back to me within 24 hrs.

Redline D4 ATF is what is used in the manual transmission also.

Re: Transmission fluid change
I've since learnt there should be a sticker on the transmission stating the oil to use, will get that checked out when its in for service at my friends garage.

Re: Transmission fluid change
the sticker will probably say to use MTF-LT1 or LT2 , which are both now superseded by MTF-LT3.
they only come in 5 liter jugs (roughly £100) so the alternative is to use Redline D4 ATF (for both auto and manual transmissions).

Or RoyalPurple, Amzoil. Both are great oils...

Re: Transmission fluid change
At 62000 miles I just changed out my fluid on my SMG transmission. My transmission had the yellow label that said to use MTF-LT1 but I used Pentosin MTF-LT2. Shifts feel alot smoother and quieter.

Re: Transmission fluid change
Just changed my tranny fluid this weekend and replaced w/ Red Line ATF D4. Had a hard time finding the fill and drain bolts cause mine are different from the pics. The plugs on my Z4 are "female". So I needed at Allan Key to get it off. I kept looking for a 17mm bolt to loosen, but couldn't find them. Then I just tried to loosen the 2 that make sense to me and yup, tranny fluid started flowing out. Afterwards, I saw a bunch of metal shavings in the drained fluid and the shifts are SUPER SMOOTH now!! Wasn't bad before changing the fluid, but now it's like hot knife through butter!!

Re: Transmission fluid change
Looking forward to getting mine changed tomorrow albeit for the BMW MT-2 fluid, fingers crossed it smooths out the notchyness a little.
