Broken Springs - List (add yourself if you've been affected)

Broken coils...

2004 Z4 2.2se with 23,500 miles on clock.... both rear coils broken 1.5 turns from bottom.
What replacements do you recommend (don’t want to lower) … are they easy to fit?

Unless you get some springs custom-made, you've got to go either with the same BMW springs (and risk the same happening again) or aftermarket springs. But I couldn't find aftermarket springs that DIDN'T lower so I fitted Eibach Pro springs. They've lowered my Z4 by 15mm over a sport-suspensioned Z4, equivalent to a 30mm drop on a non-sport-suspensioned Z4. I'm not over the moon at lowering it (I'd rather have kept standard height) but was a necessary evil to get away from sh*tty BMW springs!

No idea how much moolah involved in custom springs though...

Welcome to the forum BTW! :D

Do the Alpina Roadster ones snap as well?

Might just go to an Alpina spring/damper setup if mine ever go, if their setup is any better.

Curtis's springs snapped and his is an Alpina (see first page of this thread)

Damn it me too! found out today! both back springs 33000 miles 03 3.0L with sports suspesion.. Scarely I topped out this car the other day!! Just had fitted new discs all round which was easier said than done my Z being a pre feb 2004 car the rear discs are slightly different and the new versions do not fit.. just so you know!!

All being fair....an ideal world... you would hope that BMW would take note of how many springs have been faulty (3 pages alone from this forum) ..... after costing me €220 + vat to replace!

me too,

2005 3.0 i se
42000
1 rear spring

dealer will be replacing both rear springs under my extended warranty { well £100 excess }

yet another victim to add to your list! discovered it yesterday whilst giving the car a going over!

2005 2.0 roadster
34K
Rear n/s spring.

A question for you all: is fitting a set of Eibach springs gonna be an issue when using the original shock absorbers on the vehicle, knowing that the car is now gonna be sitting 30mm lower?

just purchasing 03 3.0 SE

both rear springs need replacing under AUC from the dealer

glad I went to a franchised dealer

latest is springs are on back order with BMW

they must have run out !!!!!!!

03 3.0i

Just replaced all four discs and pads. Guess I found what was squeaking on the rear near side. A broken spring!.

Will be fitting either Eiback Pro or Jan Speed all round.

Regards

Sceptre

How can you easily identify broken springs? I measured the heights of each corner, and the difference between the rear is over TIS's limit (26mm vs 10mm). Can it be a broken spring on the OSR (driver side)?

Good news. I thought they would say springs/shock absorbers are wear and tear items (regardless of mileage). I must go and ask the dealer to check my car when they inspect the possible claim my corroded 108 wheels this week.

Mine went today.....I heard the crack when the car was parked after I had driven it 1 mile.

October 2004 - 3.0l - 22,500 miles.

Any American owners had this issue?

Must be our s**t weather.

2003 American version with 42,000. still original coils, but car has never been in fould weather since new (still has the part number decals on the coils actually). I guess mine isn't a representative sample.
