Roof operation G29
Good morning.
As a newbie to the site I wonder if you could shed any light on a possible problem.
Only had the car 2 months now. When I came to open the roof a few days ago, the windows went down then the roof started to move, but stopped after about 4 inches of travel and stayed there. No matter what I did it refused to budge. Using the roof switch made the passenger window rise a couple of inches then retract again. I got out locked the car and then opening it again, thinking it would reset the electrics, but no luck.
The screen put up a warning and the car was chiming a way, but nothing would reset the roof. I looked in the handbook and the manual operation was prevented because of where the roof had stopped. This went on for about 20 minutes. On the point of ringing the AA or BMW Rescue, out of habit I used the window switches to raise them prior to getting out and leaving the vehicle. To my amazement the roof started moving and retracted perfectly.
This could be a real problem in the event of heavy rain starting......
Looking at the car's handbook the Mazda MX5's folding hardtop I have is dead easy to move manually if it sticks (it never has though!).
The zed's roof has behaved perfectly ever since. Trying to get hold of a BMW dealer to discuss it is like knitting fog.
Anyone any idea?
Very many thanks

2 month old car showing potential roof issues already? Drive it round to the supplying dealership tomorrow, explain what happened, and ask them to do diagnostic checks to see what fault code if any is logged. Also lower and then raise the roof 10 times in their presence to see if initial fault recurs.

100% go to BMW and see if there is a fault code. Let us know how you get on.

Car booked in for Thursday. Loan car booked for 4/5 days. They suspect the window mechanism causing the roof to fault. Will let you know.

Took it to BMW today. Windows had thrown up many error codes, but roof operation none. So they know there was an "event", that much was obvious. Basically the sequence went completely out of order. Lent me a new X2 for a week to keep checking and in case they needed parts from Germany!
They cleared the codes and the fault would not replicate no matter how many times they operated the roof or windows. Discussed scenarios, but none fitted. Possible low battery? (though why, after 10 miles?) Intermittent motor fault? Software glitch? Sensor failure? They went through all the print-outs with me. They again offered to leave me with the loan car for a week whilst they kept on trying it. I decided to take the car back and try that myself in the garage and if it did it again they offered to recover the car.
So, the mystery continues......

did you use the key or the lever inside the car?
The key is a bit slow a times and stops halfway and then you can sometimes not open close the roof anymore and sometimes it even blocks you from locking/unlocking the doors (have had this happen only once so far)
After a minute or so it reacts again.
Also did this happen to you outside? or inside a garage box, maybe theres some proximity sensor thats getting triggered preventing the roof from opening more (not sure if there are any)

Thanks for your response.
From what I could see the manual release was hidden by the partial retraction of the roof, so I was unable to try it.
Luckily the sun was shining! I was in a hospital car park when it faulted.
From the fault codes the error seems to lie with the windows.
For a while I’ll only try it in the safety of the garage!

Followup, based on the first post, I closed my windows. The roof then started working properly.
