Boot lock and roof

Post by Ouroux71 » Fri Apr 03, 2020 3:37 pm

So the fact that locking it in the up position and doesn't activate the the motors suggests that the tailgate locking mechanism has died - either the micro switches or something else? The trunk light is working..

The black plug is that the one that the one that the one that clips into the cable that often breaks?

I could not see how the clip undoes (the photo with the red arrow)... I guess I could try anything now as if I break it it will not make any difference..

Looked at the wiring diagram but I'm not great on this. S419 is the part with the micro switch? I can't see how to unclip this part out? I do have a multimeter if I can get it out...

I guess the next step is a replacement....

Ordered a replacement boot closing unit (always good to have a spare for the future) but I now think the problem is the remote control box unit that I installed made by cabrio-module.de

I spoke with someone who installed this unit and it worked for a while.. Then he started to have problems with the soft close.. After exhaustive checks he removed the cabrio unit and the soft close worked without any more issues... I will refit the boot/trunk closing mechanism today and try to get my car back to how it was... I say try as I'm not sure how I can fully uninstall the unit as the roof was partially opened for the install...

I'll add further info when and if I get things working...

Boot lock and roof

Post by Ouroux71 » Sat Apr 04, 2020 9:25 am

Morning Robbi,

Your help was great... I have found out disconnecting the box makes the soft close work... So the trunk closing is not faulty and has never been... There is some clash between the car and the cabrio-roof remote module that makes the soft close work intermittent... Unfortunate as I though the module was great but I'll need to find another unit to do the remote open/close.... But I'm having a big break from roof work after this.

Buying a spare trunk close module is an unwelcome expense but I think having a spare unit could be helpful in the future...

And once again thanks and hopefully a decent weekend despite the lockdown...

Boot lock and roof

Post by crocoyes7 » Sat Aug 08, 2020 8:46 am

Jumped in the car this morning with no issues. Got a mile or so down the road and the roof warning light and chime came on. Pulled over and went through the processes of closing the roof. Unexpectedly, the windows came down and everything has stopped working. Windows won't go up, roof won't budge, boot locked.
Any help appreciated!

does everything else work? Any codes showing? Might be an idea to start a new thread rather than hijacking this one.

Just wanted to chime in to let you know I just had the exact same thing happening to me. I also have the cabrio module from the same vendor, and for me also it started with the soft-close of the trunk not working; I had to SLAM the trunk to make it close. Of course the next thing that happens (since the car thinks the trunk is not closed properly) is that the car is telling something is wrong with the roof and it won't open/close.

I had to drive around like this for a while, since my BMW specialist was on vacation, so I had some time to investigate further (which made me find your message, thanks!)

I told my BMW specialist of your story, although I added that it sounded a bit unlikely to me, considering the symptoms. The guy is quite specialised in diagnostics & it took him less than an hour (possibly with some help of me pointing out your experience) to find that it was indeed the roof-comfort module... (he put a scope on it etc.)

Once that module was removed everything started working flawlessly.

I contacted cabrio-module.de and Andreas (Owner) asked me to send him the module for inspection. He just messaged me that he indeed found the module to be faulty and I will be shipped a new one, as it is within the 2 year guarantee period.

The initial symptoms did not make it obvious to me where the issue was to be found, so I just wanted to let you guys know about this experience so that you don't make a lot of costs to get to the root cause of the issue...

The only thing that I'm a bit worried about is that this is hopefully not going to happen again... Are there people here that have the same module and it has been flawlessly working for years? (for me it took only 7 months for the problem to show up)

By slamming down the boot lid you are probably forcing it to lock. But the roof system checks everything electrical is working before allowing you to open the roof. This is important because if one of the roof parts including the trunk lid is not in the right place as the conversion is happening, there could be a lot of expensive damage.
