Hardtop roof issues. 2013 plate

Hi all. Just purchased my first Z4 - having issues with the roof warning light coming on & a message telling me the hardtop is not latched. The roof is up when this occurs. However I've had the roof get stuck down, so when you go to put the roof back up the rear window section won't engage back into place. The issue has also affected the boot locking it and not allowing me access even thoough the roof was up! Side windows get stuck down. These are all intermittent problems. Taking it back to dealer this week but this is the second time it's occurreed the first was during the dealers demo run! BMW fixed it the. But clearly the issue remains. Does anyone have any similar experience of this? I've read some links on here and it appears a common problem. Just wondered how this was fixed in the end ???

I think I'd be the first to say it's not common. Most Z4 drivers are not members of this site, and of say 5% of members who may have had this same problem, then overall its a very very small % of E89 drivers. I, in 4 years, didn't have a single roof problem

That's good news that it's not a common problem. Will see what the service centre does next week. However if anyone on here does have the same issue I'd be interested to hear what the solution was! :driving:

I'm sure you'll get it sorted and warranty is a great comforts.

The single biggest problem with the E89 has been alloys.....with a couple of exhaust and engine issues, very robust car otherwise

Well that's covered everything...alloys, engine, exhaust and roof!

Even the ash tray has problems. Mine won't open unless I apply pressure to both the fore and aft edge of the flip up panel.

If you look at my post in this forum E89 re roof microswitch you will see mine suffered this and was quick to cure but a pain when it mucks about with the roof ...

Mine did all you have said and has been fine since the offending microswitch was replaced. I was told the switches are the usual thing that goes wrong. The 3 series had many issues with their clamshell roof but the E89 has in the main been sorted and it is not considered a significant issue in the grand scheme of things.

Mine is also a 2013 model btw.

See the pics I took.
The wires to that microswitch seem badly positioned. Although my cars done 52k and looks fine.
I wonder if the cable tie has been causing some snagging on the wires if misplaced.
The microswitch wires enter the braided loom just below the cable tie.

I'm having the same issue with mine and hopefully taking it back in to the garage next week to have it looked at - i'll let you know what they say!

A lot of owners are not members of this site, so we don't know how common any problem is...only BMW know that.

My 2011 35is (48k) has had this happen twice in a month. Fortunately the dealer is honoring the extended warranty I purchased. 1st time they said the wiring harness (drivers side) that extends up the the pillar from the trunk was pinched, and replaced the wire. The 2nd time they said it was the same thing on the passenger side. This time they are replacing the entire wiring harness/hydraulic line that extends up both sides. Its been over 2 weeks now, and will probably be another week before complete. What a pain !

Had the same problem , symptoms exactly the same .As stated in earlier post a micro switch problem. As i am out of warranty i took it to an independent specialist for roof problems who fixed it with new micro switch. Works fine ever since.

And this is why a lot of E89 owners are choosing to extend the warranty. We all know that the roof could cause issues at any point and it could be costly.

So if you are considering why you should extend the warranty this is probably the top reason. If you've got a 35i or 35is the DTC and the roof are probably going to be the 'biggies' unless you completely blow up the engine

Just out of interest, how much did an Indy charge up fix it?

Sorry for late reply been away without wifi, total cost £280.00 plus vat. Not cheap but probably less than a BMW garage,

In my case it was a micro switch which was replaced. Looked all of 10.00 quids worth .The Indy had to get one from BMW obviously special to BMW roofs . I guess the cost is in getting to it and reorganising the sequence of opening/closing.

There's been a few micro switch problems, would be nice to know if there's a common failure of a specific switch.
Perhaps poorly designed, manufactured or poor routing of cables.
RealOEM costs them out at $21, so say £21 UK.

Just had mine done whilst in for its first service. Same problems as described for a couple of months. Micro switch changed and an annoying rattle in the headlining sorted. Would have been very happy if I hadn't noticed the garage has scratched my front O/S alloy! Too late to do anything about it now as picked it up in the rain Friday - only noticed it today!! At least my roof works!!!!

Curious as to how much did you guys end up spending to fix the roof operation issue on the E89 ?

I have a 2014 E89, 39k miles - had mine for 1.5yrs with zero fault whatsoever, and 10 days ago my roof stopped 90% through on the opening sequence, and had to turn off/on engine and try reclosing/opening to make it complete the cycle eventually. Issues seems either at like 90% of the opening sequence (when only windows need to come up, and boot almost closed), or 80% of the closing sequence (when rear window is on top of roof and needs to go back to its position)

And since then I havent really tried it again, but I had the Roof 'red' button starting to flash randomly for a few seconds while driving (or at startup) , although roof was fully up and i was not trying to do anything with it. So I am guessing one of these sensor / microswitch either misaligned or faulty ? (since the actual mechanism does work - eventually-)

I have just booked it in for diagnostics at BMW main dealer (london), asked 150gbp for diagnostics, but obviously this isnt representative of how much I'll end up paying..

this happens if the battery is not charged enough and there's not enough juice to finish the operation

if you don't have any fault codes, I wouldn't worry about it right now

if your dealer is not specialized in roof issues, you won't get far
