E89 roof relay change
The relays I replaced looked like new, inside and out, however as Smartbear puts it the relays are cheap the roof motor isn’t !

I changed mine recently and because I’m a nerd I pulled the covers off the old ones to inspect the contacts. One was fine, but the other was well on its way out. Because they are not the highest quality (even the ones purchased through BMW) the alignment of the contacts was off. The contact surface was therefore reduced to about 50%, which over time clearly saw the current concentrated over a smaller area, resulting in quite a bit of arcing and subsequently pitting on the contacts. £18 we’ll spent (even though there was no symptoms suggesting a change was needed).

Going to buy two and do mine when I get paid this week. I have been intending to do this job for ages and not got round to it.
Literally just swap them out by removing old ones and putting the news ones in? Battery can be left connected etc?

It’s as simple as that, and I’m useless with any form of DIYstep_change wrote: ↑Sun Jul 25, 2021 11:12 am Going to buy two and do mine when I get paid this week. I have been intending to do this job for ages and not got round to it.

But dont use any tool, you can brick the red fuse box next to the battery.
Have a look:

Ok, thank you! I will order the parts later this week and fit them straight away. I am all for simple, preventative maintenance.

I'd go further and say get rid of any metal objects in the boot first!RobbiZ4 wrote: ↑Sun Jul 25, 2021 1:33 pmYes, correct.step_change wrote: ↑Sun Jul 25, 2021 11:12 am Literally just swap them out by removing old ones and putting the news ones in? Battery can be left connected etc?

Hell, even an umbrella falling across the battery could ruin your day if it bridges the terminals with a metal part.
I actually have an old piece of rubber floor mat that I lay across the top of the battery on any car I'm tinkering with.
After welding a spanner to the wing of an old Capri I learned the hard way.

Is there not an easier to follow UK guide to replacing these?
Maybe including where to buy and what spec of part?
Just a thought...

Jesus it easy enough.
Go to BMW dealer, they have hundreds in stock.
Seems like they fail all the time, used on many vehicles.
Then just lift floor in boot, pull relays out plug in new, 30 second job.
They are even pink, to make the job easier.
