So my 2nd Zed makes an unplanned entry to the household.

Wasn't planning this route at all, but a quick drive in a friend's E89 23i back in the summer showed me how nice they are - then a slightly unloved 3.0 popped up for sale 15 minutes down the road at a decent price, so home it came.

I've enjoyed keeping a record of everything that's happened with my E85 (though probably a boring read for anyone except me!) so thought I'd do the same for the newbie.

Ivory white heated nappa leather + pure white design option
100k when purchased, October 2019

And the first fix completed too. The USB port in the arm rest wasn't working (the aux port was working fine). On closer examination the little plastic 'guide' bit inside the socket had been snapped off at some point and the 4 metal pins were all bent beyond repair.

I bought part number 9129651 off Ebay - which is different to the part number on the one I removed, 9138402. They are very similar however, just some different coloured plastic and the 'Aux In' text is reversed. Now able to stream music from a USB drive, so all working fine.

Original part: (now looking a bit shabby - rather than take everything apart I just pulled it out with long nose pliers seeing as it was broken anyway)

The car will look great with a little TLC and once you've changed the grills and powder coated the wheels :)

Thanks :D

Yes they're the obvious 2 places to start aren't they.

Unfortunately the 2 front tyres need replacing, and the rears have some budgets on currently - so I'm looking at a large bill to get the 294's on the car and looking decent. I love the design though, so they'll be going in the loft until funds permit.

I'm picking up a set of 290 wheels from another forum member this week, with almost new Bridgestones all round - not the best wheel design and 17" rather than 18" but will do the job and remove the red.

Another forum member has generously agreed to send me his standard grilles for a charitable donation, so that will sort that bit of red out too - I'll give him a proper shout out in due course.

I'm very familiar with E85s, but know very little about the E89s - are there any other obvious quick winsI should have on my mod short list? (I prefer the pre facelift side markers, so won't be upgrading those)

Congrats on the new car. She's a beauty  But I'm biased, I have the same year and model :)
Michelin Pilot Sport 4s transformed the ride and handling for me.

That will come good with some time & effort , it was spotted & discussed on the forum recently , cheap car that won't look it once back to a more stock look
10yrs old now but imo not showing their age at all , still a great looking car & the black disguises the non Msport bumpers too
Happy days

I spotted this car on Autotrader a few weeks back, the price was good but I would imagine the wheels and grills must have put many off it. Will look great when back to stock. Regarding the PDC sensor you could try spraying WD40 on it, I had this issue with a PDC sensor on mine a couple of weeks back and after spraying it with WD40 it seems to be fine since.

Looking at your first photo, you seem to have a good selection of modes of transport. :D You look to be living life to the full.

Thanks for the tip - I've read they can be problematic, especially after getting wet. I'm sure when I first picked it up just one of them was playing up, whereas after washing the car yesterday they were all going haywire :) I'll give them a decent dry, listen out for the tell-tale clicking and give the WD40 idea a go.

Ha, the boat belongs to my next door neighbour and I've just agreed the sale of my Triumph Sprint motorbike - a casualty of the E89 arriving. White Skoda is my family wagon, blue Honda is Mrs Timmyboybunter's car. I do consider us very lucky however to be able to have a 'toy' car too - though until the E85 is sold I am officially unpopular in the house.

Cheers - yours looks in very shiny condition. Truth be told black would be the last colour I'd choose - looks great for 5 minutes, but just gets ruined as soon as you use it especially in winter. The sterling grey on my E85 hides the dirt very, very well.

Thanks - I saw it mentioned in the 'E89 market watch' thread but couldn't find any other discussion about it. Curious to read if you do have another thread link to hand. I've already found myself looking at black M-Sport bumpers on Ebay. Must. Resist.

I've thought about the M sport bumpers for my car too but in the end I've come to the conclusion this is one BMW that actually looks better in standard trim especially in black and does not loose a lot by not having it. The 7 series is another that is better in standard rather than M Sport all the rest 1 2 3 4 5 series etc have to be M Sport.

Totally agree with above comments

Sat nav maps updated - easy and painless to do, took about 45 mins. I was lazy and bought one of those 'lifetime' FSC codes from Ebay for £7 - worked perfectly.

After:

A bit of a bargain then, what's not to like. : :D

Well apart from the lipstick.

Once you get those wheels and grill sorted you'll have yourself a corker.

That's cool. I did not know I could actually have useful NAV on my 2010. I must have 10 yr old maps or such
Where did you buy and what all did you have to do to update?

If I understand correctly (based on some quick Googling), at some point in 2010 there is a cut off point - if your car was made prior to the cut off point, you are unable to perform the map update yourself but need to take it to a dealers to perform (or presumably it is possibly using INPA etc) at least once. As the date of my maps when I bought the car was 2014, they must have been done already.

If you look at the bottom left of the map view, if there is a little 'tick' box then you can update yourself - if it is not present, then you can't.

Here's a random example:

Tick.jpg

You then need to get hold of the maps data - this is obviously content that must be paid for, so the formal answer is you need to buy it from somewhere but it's not difficult to find. Once you have the data, stick it on a Fat32 formatted USB drive - the files I used were just over 23gb and it has all worked fine using a cheap old 64gb drive I had lying around (which I will be using for music eventually). Note Windows will not format a drive this big into Fat32 format but there are various tools to do.

Stick the drive in the glovebox USB socket (NOT the arm rest USB socket), after a small pause it will recognise the update and ask you to enter a code using the iDrive wheel - this is the code I bought from Ebay, and as I supposedly bought a 'lifetime' code I shouldn't have to enter one again.

The data will then transfer in about 45 minutes - I have mine on charge currently so was happy to sit in the car and wait, enjoying some peace and quiet :) but you can just drive the car normally and it will start/stop the update happily whenever it can.

Thank you for taking the time to explain that. I'll check for the check box and proceed from there... might have to go out in the garage and look now. Okay - It has the check mark. Where and how did you see the date of the maps loaded?
Next step > To check the map version in your BMW, go to your iDrive navigation view, open the settings menu and scroll down to Navigation system version. You will see the region, map version and year of your current map. If it's more than a year old, it's time to update.
Yikes! It says I'm on the original 2009 version :o

Mines a 2009 and has the tick in the navigation but when I was updating my maps the online store I got the updates from told me I needed the CD / DVDs and not the USB stick. Are they right or can mine actually be updated using the USB?
