E85 3.0si rough idle / “thwacking” noise?

Hi skelters,

Not yet, as don’t have a code reader and don’t want to go to the Stealership! That said, I’ll try and find a local BMW specialist if it continues.

Cheers,

George

There's a thread on the forum for Who Has Carly.

Someone close will be able to check for any error codes.

Where are you?

Guys, don't forget that Halfords do price matching. I bought three 5 litre bottles of Castrol Edge to do my Z4 and the Audi and saved something like £40 by price matching an online shop I've used before. It'll knock the socks of most special offers!

Does it make that noise from start when cold. I ask because I have just had a mechanic out to my Ford Focus (day car) which is making a similar noise. Only does it when engine gets hot. Mechanic says its the typical noise of a timing chain tensioner on the way out. This can effect engine timing and cause rough idling as well as that noise.

Hi Mike, thanks for that, much appreciated. Does it all of the time, but seems to have quietened down a bit now after an exuberant run out on Sat eve in the sun :) Will keep my ear out next time it starts cold and also after a good run when hot

Here's the worst, worst case....

What's the mileage on the car?

Which oil is in the car?

As you can see from that happened from 2k on the clock and the car was doing 2 x 25 mile trips per day or every other day with no short journeys, which throws a lot of the usual causes such as short journey and lack off use out of the window.

OP’s sounds normal though, just injector noise. Hearing sound on video though can be difficult.

Thanks guys. Re. DISA valve - didn’t the N52 (3.0si) get a revised DISA that is meant not to have the same issues as on the M54 (pre-2006) Z’s?

Cheers,

George

Yeh, completely different setup on the N52 (in fact it has 2 DISA valves) and not known to fail (certainly not in the same way as the M54). You will always get a few people throwing comments around which aren't perhaps that well considered - but that's OK, just don't let it keep you awake at night 8). Your engine sounds fine to me.
