Ridiculous water under the driver seat 2016 z4

Post by Portisz4 » Tue Dec 26, 2023 6:19 pm

I was wondering before I rip the car apart . I have wet at the back of the cabin floor behind the driver seat.
I reached round to grab something and the floor is soaked.

Is there anything common I need to check before I rip the seats out .....

Actually I've just taken the seat out/up it's soaked.
No idea how to dry this

You need to remove the carpets to dry them. They have loads of foam underneath which soaks up water like a.....foam sponge!
Be careful as they will be very heavy and you can rip the carpet material (ask me how I know).

Then you need to find where the water is coming in!
All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.

I did indeed rip it !! Luckily it won't show. Yes there is a ton of water in there. Will have to try and get in there with a dryer tomorrow .
God knows where it's came from

Is a one piece carpet or a piece each side ?

There might get water from the climate drain onto the floor/carpet.

It's an open topic since years:

I'm not sure, if that might be similiar to your issue.

Also under carpet is an accelarometer with wiring. Don't want to ruin that.

I thought I'd fixed the light cluster rubber. But water is streaming in the back light rubber boot.
So,
Is it possible for water to get from the back left light cluster area to the front driver footwell of the car ??

If the rear floor of the boot is flooded then there are two ducts for cables to run from the boot to the passenger compartment at boot level…each is about 1.5 by 3 inches..
We choose to go to on with this endeavour at this time and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard…

Absolutely not from the rear lightclusters except you are using it as a Yellow Submarine. 8)

@B21 is correct, but that requires tons of water.

Are you sure, the backlight seals are mounted correctly (carefully pulled into the boot)?

I have to fiddle with the light boots. Perhaps a little sealant.

So, where can it come from then? There was a lot of water under the carpet. The sponge needed wringing out under the seat.

Having just bought a Z3 which had enough water in the carpets to sustain several goldfish, I would say check EVERY rubber seal.
The Z4 is different to a Z3 but the way they seal from the elements is very similar.

The most obvious is the windscreen to roof seal, as if water gets past that it can track down the A pillars and will dump it straight onto the carpets without much sign.

Look for watermarks/ staining around the plastic trims near the floor, then work back from there.

A small leak somewhere can let in a lot of water over time and it has nowhere to go except to soak into the carpet foam. It won't evaporate easily, either, as the carpet acts like a 'non return' barrier.

Good luck!

If you pull off the kick plastic trim, towards it's front edge i noticed some water wetting foam under carpet by a stain.
I think water got under the door rubber seal then runs down to trim.

Got in the car today and noticed the seat belt was wet. Checked under the seat and it was soaking.

I think I know where mine is coming in. As the seat belt was wet I assumed it's coming in high. Looks like the rear window seal.

Need to keep an eye on it to see what needs to be done about it. Seemed a lot of water for a small leak, but I guess it could have been like that since I have had it and every time it rained there is ingress.

I had to take the seat out of mine . Took me a couple of hours to dry out the foam with dryers and such.

Now need the find how it's getting it. I've had the door card off but the membrane is all sealed very well so it isn't that
