Hi i got 2009 E89 3.0 S Drive with a ZF 6 speed automatic transmission am having a issue when the transmission down shifts it seems like when it down shifts from 4 to 3 to 2 its shifting to early it feels like your getting engine breaking like you would in a manual car when you down shift to early has any body had this issue or no what the problem could be thanks

Mine has a habit of doing that but only normally when going up hills, my 7 speed 2 series does the same but the changes are so smooth it is hard to notice

Whatever it is, OP, it ain't going to be a self-fix, so find yourself a good auto-box specialist.

If you're lucky, it might be no more than a gearbox oil change.

(If you're near Leicester, I know a very good one.)

If you drain the oil collect it in a clean white container for analysis.
Look for metal debris/dust by running a magnet through it, also it should not smell burnt.
Keep the oil off your skin, material from the brake bands can cause serious skin reactions in some people.

I had downshift issues with an old E89 and spoke to ZF directly about it, they have a tech support team at their UK HQ (Nottingham I think), the advice to me was that a firmware upgrade plus an oil change would probably sort it out. I had both done at the same time by a good BMW specialist in Reading and the problem was sorted, I think it cost me about £250 but I may be wrong, it was about four years ago now. May be worth giving ZF a call to get their view before spending cash.
