Z4's - is there a long and short version?

Hi all,

Apologies for such a noobie question (I'm new at looking at the Z4's but big fan - lovely car) but I can't seem to find the answer with google.

I have seen what seems to be two types of Z4 - one is longer and the other shorter. Is one the M or is it about the age? I think I remember reading about a face-lift post 2006?

Please someone put me out of my misery!

hello and welcome

there are 3 basic types

1/ the convertible
2/ the coupe
3/ the hard top convertible

1 and 2 are identical apart form the roof, 3 is the newer version (2009 onwards)

Ahhh simples.

Thanks for the insight. Personally I'm only looking at those with hardtops, but the retractable hardtop is a great feature.

you need the newer zed then, the E89, there are many engine/specs to look at

2003-2008 E85 Z4 Roadster (Soft top) Engines 2.0 (four cylinder) 2.2, 2.5, 3.0 (6 cylinder) Mild facelift in 2006. Engines 2.5i, 2.5si, 3.0si. 3.2 M. All 6 cylinder.

2006-2008 E86 Z4 Coupe (Fixed roof) Engines 3.0si, 3.2 M. 6 cylinder

2009 - Current E89 Z4 Roadster (Folding hardtop) Engines 1.8,2.0 (sDrive18i, sDrive20i 4 cylinder) 2.5 (sDrive 23i) 3.0 (sDrive30i, sDrive35i, sDrive35is 6 cylinder)

The current Z4 is roughly 6" longer than the previous model.

Far be it from me to say that an extra 6" wouldn't make a more formidable size  but I was looking at two which seemed a hugely different in lengths. Maybe I was going mad and mistook a Z3 for a Z4 or something daft like that.

The 2009+ E89 Roadster sounds like a winner. Any fallback from that model I should look into?

Thanks to all for the great insight and welcome
