Z4ms replacement

Wowsers, congrats awesome car, just watch you don't burn your calves getting out on the side exhausts

Don't know how the car drives but you certainly get a load of awesomeness in road presence

Will give that a look cheers good find! That's the SRT-10 though - leap years ahead of the RT/10 I'd imagine (2004 onwards vs 1995 for the RT) Will still be an interested comparison :) Newer vipers are out of the question, you have to convert them to get them on the road here, so the $40k us buy price has an extra $50k AU tacked on to it :(

No idea on how they drive, but they look 8) , and would love to have a go in one myself one day. Vipers were definitely up there as one of my fav's as a kid growing up and have a certain stigma about them that a lot of other cars do not. I do however think it could be somewhat expensive to run/maintain.

Be interested to see how you get on with this

Yeah that's the thing, trying to figure if the typical yank stigma applies to them or if it's just the stereotype. The hoods on them look like absolute garbage on the down side, and being able to push a button to raise it will be missed.. Running won't be too bad, fuel isn't pricey here, insurance is the same as the Z, dealer prices to maintain the history on the beem will be comparable to maintaining the viper myself / getting a specialist (cheap, parts from the us, euro parts are ridiculous here)

Sorry mate I just saw this and I see you've already made the plunge. You won't regret it. I had the car for 5 hours and I didn't want to give it back. It just drew heaps of positive attention... "dudes got a viper"' some guy said as I cruised across Hoover dam. The pull on the freeway was amazing. You will need to do something about the suspension though. Great choice. I look forward to your updates.
I say a GTS the other day in blue with white strips and I wanted it. The only thing that really puts me off is the interior, it just looks awful. But with that engine, I'm sure I could live with it.

Hhhmmm ?
Not my basket of whelks but a interesting purchase & hope you keep us dialled into life with it in comparison to the ZM
Can't be many in the UK ?

Dissapointing but not dissapointing twist.. Rollercoaster week and mixed emotions! Took the viper out to find some strange noises. Folowed by the owner ( it was being sold on consignment) ooming and aaahing and threatening to pull outof the deal despite me having moved heaven and earth to try and get it home and signing a contract) So I drove some others back to back expecting the worst.. I want the next car to be special and to be very long term. So had almost resigned to giving up. Then the final blow came with the seller saying he wants to hold onto it for 12-18 months due to a business he was selling the car to buy being put off for another 12 months.

Was a fun day, I drove and looked around db7 v12s (sound great, not particularly the best drive), 360s (didnt want to finance the gap), m5s (far too grown up), ac cobra rep (not really 'me') and settled on 3 which were what I was contemplating months back.

1 - an M6 which I've now driven 3 of and not taken the plunge which I suppose says it all, I want to love them, but just so bargey..
2 - a low km cambiocorsa. These grow on me more and more, that smooth brutal 430 derived v8.. flappy paddles, entertaining albeitslightlylaggy - having had an aventador around the track as well as a gtr, Im not sure I wouldnt get very bored of the maserati. It was fully loaded.. absolutely sublime but not sporty. Kind of fugly looks, like an ugly pet. Id grow to love it but it would always go "I love you, but..."
3 - a porsche. Or what I thought was just a boggo 996 porsche. Modest enough spec, immaculate interior with suede roofliner, no sat nav etc. However that's where the modesty trails off. It's got the factory optional carrera performance pack which was standard on the carrera cup, which means it features aditional radiators, reworked oil sump and delivery, headers, pistons, intake manifold to name some of the work and is modified by Gemballa, so features a gemballa gt3 inspired body, remapped, adjustable suspension and full exhaust which sounds amazing, not as loud as the rpi but a much nicer, raspier tone

It's now sitting in my garage and I absolutely love it! It's a rediculously smooth ride considering how flat it corners at speed, taking bends at 20+kph faster and it stays very composed even on the limit so far.. The sound isn't the same as the M, but it sounds terriffic, really roaring from 3k or so. Gets up to speed extremely quickly without much drama, I knew the M would be a hard act to follow but Im in love lol which I find suprising considering I was going for something very different but at least this can tear up a track too. It handles so much better than the vantage I had a brief stint in, feeling like a hatch around town and a gokart in the country. It doesnt have the arse out driftedness of the Z and no more convertible will take some serious getting used to (at least it has a sunroof) but I haven't been dissapointed in any aspect yet. I always found the M slightly awkward to drive, long front made for nervous kerb negotiation.

So the new plan is simple. Keep the weight down and power up :D I'll probably look to keep it NA but there are some good blower and turbo kits available this side of fully droping in a turbo lump but it's a very nice change to not have anything that I feel I need to do to the car, with a select few mods in mind.. It feels very focused, no buttons on the steering wheel, no satnav etc. I was worried it wouldmake it feel dated but instead it just feels focused.

A specialist I spoke to thinks that with the light wheels, exhaust and suspension I should be at least 35kg down on the stock 1320 weight, so hopefully by the time I take out the spare, add lighter seats, possibly remove the rear seats and add lighter brakes I should be firmly in the 1200's.

The viper will be up for sale within the next 18 months at which point I'll snap it up, the seller said he'd give me first refusal. but for now Im extremely happy with the stop gap. At the risk of sounding like a complete wuss sack, I was really, REALLY sad giving up the Z though  out of 35 cars it's the only one Ive kept for more than 8 months and Ive enjoyed every bloody minute

Well thats somewhat of an unexpected twist, but still what a lovely looking motor! You can beat a yellow car for road presence too.

I was getting so excited reading about that viper as I too lusted after one as a child but I don't think its my cup of tea but love everything about them.

Awesome stuff, its amazing how everyone comes back round to the Porsche, they are just such great all rounders looks, performance, feel, driving, pedigree always understated 99 times out of 100 the best choice!

Congrats! Does it have the sports Zorst? Get one on it asap if not :D

I'd have that Porker over the Viper any day, and I do like the Viper, just like the 911 more, good result, enjoy.

You and me both! Alhough Im currntly fitting 3 cars into a 2 car garage with help fromsome wheel dollies, the viper would have had no chance fiting! Will ave built my new house and garage by the time the guy gets back in touch so I guess it works out perfectly

They deffo are, I think it just took driving one that was the right spec to convince me they weren't too sedate compared to the M. Cant wait to get her on the dyno

I love the carrera headers and gemballa Zorst combo but will have listen / look into the sport!

Finding more work thats been done with time but so far between the carrera sports upgrade and gemballa mods and a few the owner did:

Reworked cylinder heads (inlet and exhaust ports)
Swirl pistons
Additional oil extraction pipework
Additional oil pump
Rev limiter raised by 200
Modified intake manifold
Better flowing headers
Additional radiator
Modified camshafts, greater stroke
Exhaust
Intake runners
Valve springs
Active spoiler delete
Modiied oil pan box to improve oil delivey during track use
Suspension kit
Remap

Apparantly its running 280/tonne at the mo accoring to a shop that has servce it, booked it in for a dyno and weigh in next month :D

Chalk & cheese , other than the sound i'm no fan of any lardy yank motors , they've proven time over that throwing a massive engine into a average chassis isn't everything
Share more pics of the porker please :)

oh man.... sound like a big mess around.... i THINK.... your going to regret that move to the 996.... unless its a gt3 its just not special enough imo.... you could have easily made your z4m much more special, faster vehicle, topped off in a timeless design that looks like nothing else on the road. The 996 is the of the worst of the 911 iterations.. ( exclude the special models GT3 / GT2 / C4s/ Etc) You've talked about moving to something thats going to really excite and be exotic and special and the 996 just isn't that... Not saying the Zm Was that either but the 996 definitely isn't. Don't be offended by my opinion, is just that ;-)
